That kind of thing happens plenty in the real world, its problematic but it happens.

If you didn't know that his own view aligned you would blame the character (or just bad writing and move on) so that's what I try to do when reading through. I take the author out of the equation and I either enjoy the writing/characters as presented or I don't.

Even if I didn't know about OSC I don't think I would assume "bad writing" I think I would assume "probably a Mormon" because that's a super Mormon thing.

While you can ignore a creator's words all you want, their beliefs (for better or worse) are going to show up in their work. It happens to every writer that I know of. Your world view colors everything. And it makes sense--if a writer's going to write a story with villains and heroes, his belief of good and evil is going to have to figure into that.

that is true, but that doesnt have to color your opinion of the work. You can judge it on its own terms.

for example take star wars, which as an extremely black and white "i am evil so now i kill puppies and hate everyone but me"

but we are able to enjoy it in spite of that by going "well that sucks but thats just how the Force works" or whatever.

But if the series has shitty morality and people don't like that, isn't that judging a work on its own terms?

but you dont usually hear "i hate that character x does y" in the complaints about Enders Game. You hear "I hate that the author can't keep his opinions out of it" and stuff like that.

I think its perfectly fine to not like the books for what they are, but if the main reason you don't like them is that the author happens to think the real world should/does work the same way... then i don't think thats really giving the book a chance.

And if you hate for both reasons, obviously, more power to you!

literally the second and third comments in this thread are people saying ender is a sociopath/they hate the way he kills people, tho

so uh yes clearly the author is a shitstain but people also clearly hate that character x does y, too? in this very thread?
