HOMESTUCK

I honestly think homestuck is one of the most groundbreaking works of fiction i have ever seen even if it's not always good

i know it's not perfect but it's also the first to try a lot of thing, or one of the first to really refine some aspects that have only been brought up in a very few other comics

like sure kid radd had animation but homestuck really nailed animation as a part of creating a webcomic, and now we have really nice things like ava's demon doing gorgeous animations for its end of acts, too

homestuck started some of the most interesting format-breaks and use of the medium to emphasize the story. the infinite canvas has been around for a while as a concept, but homestuck is the first thing i've seen to use image corruption as a method of storytelling

and there's been games for things before, but i've never seen another thing where games were integrated into the storyline, leaving it on the player to explore to get the whole story

also it's the first comic i know of with actual soundtracks. it blows my mind that this is a thing.

i think it's easy to forget how groundbreakingly weird and inventive homestuck is under its shitty rpers and poor pacing, but... g'dangarang i am still fucking excited over this ridiculous multimedia internet comic

i wish it was actually a GOOD comic that was groundbreaking an innovative because homestuck is shit all around: shit characters, shit writing, shit pacing - the shit list goes on and on.

Re: HOMESTUCK

(Anonymous) 2014-01-22 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
i actually really love most of the writing and a lot of the characters but yeah that pacing is baaaaad.

i was going to defend all my favorite characters here but then i realized you probably don't care so i'll just say that i love a lot of the fanwork too because yeah a lot of it is shitty but some of it just polishes off the shit and reveals some really dazzling art underneath and i am 100% okay with great things being inspired by shitty ones

i absolutely don't agree with your opinion at all but it's refreshing to know there are people in this fandom who still find something to enjoy about the canon

i thought that was long gone so it's cool to see someone so enthusiastic

Re: HOMESTUCK

i actually still really enjoy the canon myself! there's just not much point in engaging the anons who don't like it. to each their own, you know? not everyone enjoys where the canon has gone, but not everyone is going to enjoy everything.

i also mostly talk about it with a friend who also enjoys it, so.

You are not the only one anon. No, Homestuck is not some perfect series and it has a ridiculous amount of flaws. But in terms of innovation and use of internet media to tell a story it is absolutely fascinating. So many people are disillusioned by the ridiculous amount of attention it has gained (especially here in the RP scene) or the downward spiral of quality that came with the later acts, and although it is far from the perfect masterpiece that some more obsessed fans make it out to be it still has some amazing aspects to it that shouldn't be ignored.

just imagine what it could have been if the last couple acts didn't spiral downward so fast

it's definitely unique, which probably contributed to it having such an insanely huge fandom. ... now if only that fandom hadn't been so ridiculous, so anons wouldn't jump down your throat for even hinting you like something about homestuck

this just sounds like you're too young to remember the days of shit like newgrounds and albinoblacksheep and people integrating flash cartoons into their webcomics as far back as the early 2000s.

homestucks get off my lawn, etc.

There is literally nothing Hussie has done that wasn't done on NG or ABS back in the day. I forget which flash it was but everyone was shitting their pants over the animation going outside the panel and I remember rolling my eyes because everyone and their brother did that in their flash videos back in the day.

The only thing you might be able to give him credit for is incorporating the HTML5 games into the reading experience, I don't recall seeing another webcomic do that to the extent he did. (But I haven't seen every webcomic, so I could easily be wrong.)

i liked this comic a lot up until act 6. honestly, act 5 was probably the real nail in the coffin but i let it slide because i loved cascade. while i was incredibly excited about the beginning of act 6 it very quickly spiraled into a confused mess of shit-nobody-cares-about and intense, almost desperate pandering toward the tumblr side of the fanbase. argue with me about that all you want but i'll never change my mind that that's exactly what hussie did.

this along with hussie's progressively obnoxious, immature, drama-whoring attitude made me lost interest pretty fast. if the story had focused on the beta kids and the remaining important trolls i'd be reading it to this day but as it is, hussie lost sight of his own comic a long time ago and has turned it into a watered-down, boring and unfunny money machine. i guess i can't blame him for wanting to make profit and ruining his comic because of it but at the same time i'm disappointed because i used to genuinely love homestuck and it was my biggest fandom for a long time. it's rather sad to see what's become of it due to hussie being little more than a gigantic sellout.

Re: HOMESTUCK

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
cascade was definitely the highlight of homestuck. i admit i didn't like act 5 much beyond cascade though. i always heard the trolls were the reason to stay in the fandom but i found acts 1 through 4 to be a lot more interesting and amusing than 5, even if hussie did waste too much time going through them. the trolls bored me, there were too many of them and while they were quirky they never felt very distinct. every character in homestuck has the same brand of crass humor. sollux, karkat, dave, and roxy especially share too many of the same traits; sollux and dave quote/reference/have throwback conversations all the time where they quote one another so i could never get on board with him either. that said, none of the characters were ever very deep. i got the feeling that when they developed, it was more hussie stumbling into development than him thinking deeply about the characters. or readers reading too much into things. which i think hurt him in act 6 a lot since the beta kids and trolls all sound wrong after he stopped writing them.

i totally agree that hussie is catering to tumblr for act 6 and the series has become all around crap. the same tired jokes from acts 1-5 redone over and over again with a new brand of characters who are "older and more COMPLICATED!!!11" than the previous characters, shitty plot direction followed by worse pacing, dave and terezi getting together and then falling apart off-screen was moronic, gamzee and terezi getting together and skulking around together came out of no where, rose started drinking and rosemary happened with almost or no build up or interest shown from rose's side, dirk and jake got together after an obscene and surprising amount of build up and then falling apart off-screen, roxy loving dirk SO DEEP it didn't matter she drunkenly harassed him for about four years about his sexuality, the alpha trolls being based on websites or whatever with kankri starring as SJW tumblrs, the entire trickster shit and fall out where the alphas were shittily written and contradicted themselves and prior characterizations. the trickster arc was the worst since hussie blatantly lifted all the alpha kid's development straight from tumblr even when it didn't make sense for them. jane's always been boring but hussie removed about three of her quirks and now i don't think he has any clue what to do with her, tho judging from the trickster arc she doesn't remember some of the past conversation's she's had anyway. how convenient for him that she's an evil robot now with no personality now so he doesn't have to deal with fixing her issues! roxy has little to no empathy and despite having more development than all the alphas save possibly dirk, she has no ability to retain her development and is almost exactly the same character she was when she started out. all the development she's had is pure fan catering, or hussie catering to his girlfriend since apparently she loves roxy. dirk is mess of inconsistent characterization where hussie was trying to fulfill fifty different tropes at once and failed at literally all of them. puppet master? stoic badass? xanatos? oh no jk he is really a failure at all of these things and has issues with his own personality. cool story dickweed but you're still a shitty character with an equally shitty a.i.. more and more he and rose sound like exactly the same try hard cookie cutter character. jake's character has been so awful i don't even know where to start with him. his dialogue is ultra forced more than half the time so he sounds whoa nifty keen or whatever and different but his speech is just a slightly different brand of more of dave, karkat, sollux, and roxy's shit. he starts out smart enough but hits an all time intellectual low when sburb starts. his intelligence has never recovered and now he's a running gag in a speedo who is still getting all the girls and his imaginary friend dirk.

i forgot where i was going with this

basically, i agree w/ you. homestuck sucks now and hussie is a sell out. the alpha kids had potential and got fucked over by poor pacing, poorer writing, and catering to tumblr fans. even the beta kids and trolls suck in act 6, AND they'll only get worse from here on out because hussie will continue trying to write more characters at once than he's capable of handling while trying to make everything as complex as possible. i'm glad homestuck's ending, it's been on a downward spiral for years and it's about fucking time.

cascade was terrible from a storytelling standpoint. it was pretty and had nice music, but that was about it, and i remember being really excited watching it at first, but looking back it's just disappointing. in order to actually get people to understand what was going on, he had to practically write an essay explaining everything.
