why do people hate anthro characters in dwrp so much?

i mean i'd get the distaste if people were pushing them for sex or something but it seems like there's a violent kneejerk reaction to any anthro-type character even if it isn't sexualized in the least

mind shedding some light on the subject?

idk, i think anthro-type canon characters get a decent reception in dwrp. we have plenty of ponies, and i've seen several non-human characters from final fantasy and okami and disney and other series. sometimes the ponies get hate, but a lot of that has to do with the obnoxiousness of brony fandom. i've played a borderline-anthro anime character in the past and it's been totally accepted.

it's the anthro ocs who get most of the hate. part of that is the usual oc hate. part of it is furry hate - furries are a well-known subculture with an obnoxious persecution complex, and even the non-sexualized anthro characters tend to have the same aesthetics as yiff porn. yeah, there's a lot of anime porn too, but porn isn't the most recognized face of anime in the way that yiff is the most recognized face of furry. part of it is that non-human characters won't fit some games for perfectly valid setting reasons, and anthro/animal/monster/robot/etc. players have in the past thrown huge shit fits over that. and part of it is that furry ocs tend to be intentionally created as self-insert "fursonas", which is completely acceptable in some rp venues and completely unacceptable here.

If something's associated with a really terrible fanbase, then it gets hate.

All of this is really new to me and quite interesting (and a bit strange) to know. Do people here in general consider all anthropomorphic characters as furries?

What about werewolves or other human looking characters that only sometimes turn into animals? I've seen some muses that have both human and animal userpics. Or are you only talking about those who mostly look like humans but have a tail or animal ears?

eh, i'd say that werewolves and shapeshifters are different since they have a human form, and since they tend to be depicted in a "realistic" way. and a character who is basically a standard human with cat ears and a tail still counts as human.

furries are generally human-shaped with cartoon animal facial features, and even though they have completely fur-covered bodies they often wear human clothes and hairstyles. there are borderline-furry characters (like the thundercats) who have fur-covered bodies but normal human facial features... some people consider them furry, some don't. the cartoonish animal facial features seem to be the defining trait, though.

I've always been curious, do anthros without fur class as "furries"? Like, uh...characters that are reptiles and the like. I play a lizard person at an RP off of DW and for some reason my muse never seems to get lumped in with the furry crowd

those are called scalies, but its lumped into the same sort of fetish if you fap to it

saying you have a scaly preference just means you want to yiff reptiles, but in the end you still like anthros

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
bc they don't want to see them fuck anyone but they assume the person playing them does

i've yet to see a furry oc in rp that isn't terrible in a really cringe-inducing way. the ones that aren't overtly sexualized are usually cutesy childlike cubs that radiate pedo vibes, or they're totally awesome!!! sparklewoofs that look like they came out of a middle schooler's doodle notebook.

It's just like any character in DWRP: if you play well and don't do a bunch of cringey shit like smut-pushing, yapping on plurk about furrsonas and yiff (people seem to be able to get away with sharing furry porn fine so long as they warn for that shit and don't bring it up in unrelated plurks, which is fair imo), or just generally being a creep then you're likely to be well receipted.

I've seen one or two furry/anthro characters (some of them OCs) who have been played in games and seemingly gotten only positive responses, because they're legitimately interesting characters and the players know how to respect boundaries.

idk I played a canon anthro character for a while and worried about getting wank, but no one gave me shit for it. I think it is linked to the OC/fursona thing if anything, like the people above have said.

different anon, related question:

would a player of a canon anthro character get any shit for playing in the love hotel or posting on a smut meme? is that just something i should totally avoid doing?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
probably no to TLH, probably yes to memes. all of the furry characters i've seen on TLH have been received well and got a lot of comments, but for whatever reason the furry smut i see wanked on occurred in memes.
