i find that the way the word's usage has been completely disfigured by the internet as a whole is a poetic example of just how much memetics is bunk, actually.

the internet meme definition of the word actually does fit that definition though, in a loose way. internet memes are in-group jokes (culture) that get passed around through a group (the internet) in a non-genetic way.

i think op is questioning why we call things posted in bakerstreet memes, since they're not really the same thing.

idk, calling an individual lolcat picture an "element of a culture" is stretching it, although the concept of lolcats would definitely count.

Yes, that is what I was going for. I'm not upset, I'm just curious because I was trying to explain this concept to my bf and he was like "That's stupid, why would they call them memes that doesn't make any sense."

Back when people used meme comms other than Bakerstreet, memes were meant to be be reposted and spread. Remember those deviantart questionaires (also called memes) that were meant to be sent to other users at the end of them? Like that.

That said you can still see a bit of the original definition by how memes spread across the meme communities of various games, like multiple games trying out the Support Group meme.

Because using "meme" in this sense is technically correct? Consider the nuances of that definition and just how "writing prompts" function as an element of DWRP culture (and fandom! remember the writing comms back on LJ with numbered prompts?), and you'll have your answer.
