Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

the thread further up the page got me wondering what a game capped at only 100 characters would be like. cap how many characters people could have at 2, a general cast cap on all canons...

how much would people cry about it

depends on the game, tbh. there are a bunch of games i can think of that never really seemed to get higher than thirty characters, so a hundred character cap wouldn't hurt them much.

idk

i've played in multiple games where things just organically didn't exceed 100 characters at any point, and then one that intentionally capped at about 85, and it didn't really have much effect on things besides game size.

also who gives a fuck if people cry. the people whining about this shit are always the most useless roleplayers anyway.

I think it's better to cap the number of players rather than the number of characters. 50 players is still far too many to suit some modding/plotting/gameplay styles, and the domination of large games in DWRP is part of the reason why most games are so similar. If people are able to maintain real activity (not just a few network posts boomeranged with a friend two hours before AC is due) with 2, 4 or more characters, I don't see why they shouldn't be allowed to play them.

Set cast caps are kind of tricky because they limit some canons severely and barely affect others at all. But I do think mods should have the balls to say "hey, we're getting too many characters from one canon, and it's affecting the game balance." The point of rping in a game is to interact with the game as a whole, not just your own cast.

And what would you cap players at? Though I wonder how many players overall the bigger games have, if they just have a lot of players or a lot of characters played by a small group regardless.

ayrt

I've modded a couple of small games and I know that I'm happiest with groups of around 10-15 players and I absolutely can't handle more than 20. To some people, that would be a tiny, boring game, but I really like that musebox atmosphere. I don't think there's any perfect number for a player cap, but mods should recognize when their modding style or the game's premise is just incompatible with a large cast.

Languishment has a 70ish or 80ish character cap, somewhere around there.

Smash Academy has a Pokemon cap which has fluctuated depending on how Pokecrazy the game gets.

Apprentice Wanted has a 15-characters-per-cast cap.

Overall I've seen caps work really well with little to no complaints.

Mods making games: don't be afraid of caps, please!
