Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

just pointing out that i've gotten in a few discussions over test drives and having it be game-play related, but the problem with that is that unless the character gets in, the existing in-game characters have to retcon anything they played out in those threads, which isn't fair to them.

well it's not like anyone's forcing them to tag in. in fact, my ideal would be for the post to consist mainly of prospective players rather than ones already in the game, since it would be a mandatory part of the app anyway.

of course, the flaw with that is what if not a lot of people want to commit to apping and therefore don't tag on the post...

sigh idk. it was just an idea. something has to change about apps, though. i just don't know what.

and again, the problem becomes 'who are the prospective players going to play with'? Each other? And if not all of the players app in, again, that's cr and interactions that might have to be either redone in game or retconned, which again, isn't fair to the players that actually app in.

which is why i stand by my earlier statement of having it be mods/helper mods/volunteers that tag around in the test drive meme and make sure that everyone gets a tag and has a thread to use as a sample that's game specific.

agreed, though. apps as they are aren't cutting it. i've found that a lot of the reason people go way too overboard on apps with personality/history sections is because it's hard to know what the mods want to see. you could write out a succinct and readable app that has all the main points touched on and gives a look into the personality, but you'll get a revision request over not having gone into their childhood enough or their motivations or their fears or their etc, etc. so people just shove stuff in there, even if it seems banal and pointless, because they're less likely to get a revision request stating they missed something if everything and the kitchen sink is in there.

well it might work in a game if it's incorporated as an element. for example a jamjar where, during test drives, it's icly explained as the area fluctuating which results in people being temporarily brought in? that way if say, a prospective character and a game character solve something together and the prospective player doesn't end up going through with it there's no need to retcon? but if they do, they can pick up cr with the game character.

which is essentially a fourth wall event, isn't it?

what anon fail?

... does it make a difference whether we call it a test drive or a fourth wall though? something that people can use for application samples that works like a fourth wall/test drive/what the fuck ever is basically all we need.

kind of, yeah? because a fourth wall is sort of explicitly for goofy shenanigans and, tbh, i've never really liked them. yeah, you can opt out which is easy enough to do, but if someone from your canon comes in and is a copy/later version, that can cause a lot of in game crap that can have long lasting effects. same with anyone potentially apping in and deciding not to or getting rejected. personally, i prefer games that have test drives that allow for the cr between the characters to be carried on in game if they both agree to it, but it's not assumed it will.
