is it really that popular a plot device? i can only think of a handful of anime that use time loops.

IDK about time loops in anime, but clones are everywhere in JRPGs for sure. KH was my young self's first experience, but my most recent memory is various Tales Of stuff, including subplots.

ehhh... clones are a big part of Abyss's story, but are they in any Tales games beyond that?

They're a minor plot point in Symphonia and the sequel, and I guess Xillia 2 if you include alternate timeline versions of characters.

Wasn't Abyss the only one with clones...? One out of a 20-years-running series is hardly "everywhere"...

Just the most recent example I played, nonny. Another da covered the ones I was thinking of for other recent stuff.

It did come out a year after CoM/the same year as KHII tho. 358/2 after those, so that might be why I saw them "everywhere." I wonder if Xenosaga counts.
