Persistent overeating, especially when combined with a sedentary lifestyle, yes. That bulk's got to come from somewhere, those calories aren't going to ingest themselves.

i'll tell you one thing it's not caused by, and that's hypothyroidism, which seems to be the excuse du jour for obesity. contrary to what a lot of people want to believe, hypothyroidism doesn't cause obesity. the most you'll gain is about 20 pounds and most people gain way less than that, some not at all. if you do gain more it's because your eating and exercise habits are shit, not because you're hypothyroid.

and before you ask, yes i have hypothyroidism, as does a lot of my family. not a single one of us is obese and most of us aren't even overweight because we watch what we eat and stay active.
