you have 5 seconds to explain to me how ff8's story doesn't completely fall apart and eat itself after the first disc.

because my god what a shitty nonsensical story that pulls bullshit out of its ass that the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy existed to make fun of.

its honestly been too long since i played it for me to explain anything with confidence. all i can say is "i remember it being pretty awright"

it's impossible to change the past and ellone knows this, so let's have 1/3 of the game dedicated to ellone trying to change the past via the laguna flashbacks that accomplish ABSOLUTELY FUCKING NOTHING and contribute absolute zip to the main plot at all!

we were all raised in the same orphanage and the sorceress was the woman who raised us but none of us remember because the GFs ate our memories! well except irvine that piece of shit but it would've been inconvenient to the plot for him to say anything about it. BUT NO IT WASN'T THE GFS THAT'S JUST NASTY RUMORS THAT GF CRITICS ARE TRYING TO SPREAD!!1

oh no rinoa is in a coma! it's impossible to change the past, so let's go find ellone and have her change the past to save rinoa! OH WHAT'S THAT? YOU SHOT HER INTO OUTER FUCKING SPACE FOR REASONS? OK WELL LET'S GO THERE THEN. btw they haven't been able to get a working radio signal in this world for 17 fucking years but their space program is alive and well.

sorceress ultimecia is trying to compress time into a singularity by possessing ellone! instead of the sensible option of shooting ellone in the face so that she can't get possessed, LET'S TRAVEL THROUGH TIME AND LET SORCERESS ULTIMECIA COMPRESS TIME because that'll stop her from compressing time right? oh! and you know how we can escape singularity, you guys? FRIENDSHIP. AND LOVE. also, why the fuck can't ultimecia fucking find ellone if she's able to manipulate ALL TIME EVER? BUT IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO CHANGE THE PAST ANYWAY, AND ULTIMECIA KNOWS THIS, AND SHE LIVES IN THE FUTURE, SO BASICALLY EVERYTHING SHE DOES IS FUCKING POINTLESS.

come on the moon monster machines were great

taking setting stuff to 11 is what final fantasies do it's their thing

i would have been ok with the moon monster machines if the game hadn't made the first half of the first disc all about how they can't even get a radio signal working. but now there's space travel and moon bullshit?? there's taking stuff to 11 in off the wall cheeky fun ridiculousness, and then there's taking stuff to 11 in bullshit stupidity. it's a fine line that ff8 trips over quite frequently.

it's explained why the radio signals don't work, tho - it's not that their tech is lacking, but adel is freaking out so bad over being in her coma or whatever that she's completely blocking them. if you look at the screens early on you can see her thoughts all over them

but honestly the space travel bullshit was so out of nowhere i couldn't help but love it

it doesn't matter WHY they can't get a signal. the whole point is that you can't have a working space program without radio signals, butt for brains. ESPECIALLY if the interference is coming from outer fucking space. THAT'S what makes it stupid.

It's not even "let's shoot Ellone in the face so this would never happen" it's "hey this crazy scientist MADE A MACHINE based on ELLONE'S MAGIC, why don't we DESTROY IT" and literally the only reason why no one destroyed the machine was because the scientist throws a shitfit about it.

HOLY SHIT I FORGOT ABOUT THAT ENTIRELY i had a hard time following dr. odine's speech patterns to begin with so i just kind of tuned out all of his dialogue but omg you're right

FF8 is best if you treat each disc like it's a different game. There is no way to make its plot work. But it's enjoyable anyway.

i love stupid shit like that too, but the sid theory actually is... viable? compared to what the actual plot is anyway, and that's what so compelling. i just wish i was less familiar with square/se so i could convince myself it was all intentional and 8 wasn't just ass
