Tentatively thinking of apping

(Anonymous) 2013-12-30 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the premise and the great events I read about in the history, and I've wanted to app into exsilium for a long time.

But I feel a little overwhelmed and apprehensive about apping. Do you guys have any advice for newbies? What the game is like, things newbies did that you cringed at, and what you guys found helped you thrive in exsilium best?

don't app. tbh what we need is more quality control and getting even more newbies is not going to help us

i hope you're trolling because wow, what a shitty way to represent your game.

You didn't have to be such an asshole but

I have to admit that you have a point

No they don't. They're assuming new plays automatically means no quality, so they're basically saying no one at all should app.

whoever this individual is is actually lowering the quality of humanity by existing.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-01 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
sure it will. if we get more newbies, it means i will have better options than to play with a shitty human being like you.

plz join us OP! not all of us think like this asshole and actually like new players.

Wow. Ignore the asshole who replied first, they clearly have some kind of stick shoved all the way up their ass.

I think my biggest piece of advice is to read all of the FAQ and info pages for sure, as well as event info posts should you app in. I see a lot of new AND old players constantly getting things wrong because they just aren't reading or paying attention to what's happening in-game.

And don't be afraid to tag out and tag a lot, but that's really general good advice for any game at all.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-30 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I apped because everyone said the game was super backtag friendly. I might just be unlucky, but I didn't find that to be the case at first. I think your mileage will vary and I am sure there are backtag friendly people, you might just have some trial and error before you find them. There's about 2-3 posts per day, some will get a ton of comments, some will get barely any, mostly depending on how much effort you put in, but sometimes it's just bad timing. Looking back a few pages I don't see many that get under 70 or so.

No clue what kind of character you want to app so I can't tell you if their type does well, but there are some that do better than others. If your character isn't self-motivated, you'll have to do some extra work to get them involved. A lot of the plots are designed for characters who are proactive. Right now most of the story is being driven by official game-changing missions that characters have to volunteer for, rather than specific plots being piloted by a mod. The best approach for me so far has been deciding what I want and approaching people to do it with me. Certain characters might not be interested in that right away though.

Overall just be patient and persistent. I've been here for a few months and I'm just starting to feel comfortable in this game. You be lucky and find your place quickly, but it might take a while too.

And wow ignore that shitstick up there, they commented while I was writing. I bet they don't even go here.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
they probably go here. there's a small and vitriolic sect of newbie haters in game, but at least it's not as bad as exit void

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
that's a little unfair. no place hates on newbies like exit void does.

I've been in the game for a few months now and I've found that people are generally pretty good about backtagging, but as was mentioned above, not everyone does it. I think perhaps I've really lucked out in terms of the people I've threaded with because dropped threads really haven't been an issue for me so far. I apped into an existing cast and was welcomed with open arms despite only knowing a couple of the players, and I've found it to be very easy to get cross-canon CR. Plurk doesn't seem to be necessary in order to get great CR going either, though it probably wouldn't hurt. I would generally categorize the game as laid back and friendly. I've been in the game just a few months, but I've been impressed by how diverse my CR is as well as by the recent plots. The mods seem really approachable too, which is a definite plus for me. There are some anons who complain about the application standards, but I haven't experienced any issues myself so I can't comment on that at all. My one piece of advice would be to tag out a lot during your first month or so. Putting in extra effort from the start will really benefit you in the months to come as you'll likely get tags back from those same people once you make a post of your own. Best of luck, anon! Hope you app!

Read the game info! Read ALL the game info. Hit up the newbie intro log, and tag out in it - don't just post a parent comment. Observe characters you think would mesh well with yours and pursue them. Use the CR meme, tag around on it and don't just comment, and follow through. I admit that especially when I first intro'd, it helped that I knew people in the game - it helped a lot. But it's not impossible to come in otherwise and do well and get lots of CR. There's no guarantees, but this will get you off to as good a start as anything. The CR meme is timed now to where all new players will get to hit it up right away too, I believe.

It looks like we have some real negative nancies in this thread rn and that's sad. That said, I don't see that so much in game. Don't let them put you off, anon.

As someone who came into the game with the same feelings as you a few months ago, I can tell you what worked for me.

Don't be afraid to tag. Someone people will give you short threads, some people will thread for weeks with you. It's hit or miss, but you won't find out until you do it. A lot of players are back-tag friendly, too, so don't worry about that either. (A CR meme goes up around the same time as apps, as well. That helps to give you an idea of what people are looking for, too)

It is admittedly a little scary, but believe me, just going for it and doing what you think may be fun could end up surprising you.

As for the game itself, the pace varies depending on mod and player plots. If you want to find out what's going on, read the world info like other anons have suggested, but go back and read a few posts as well, just to get an idea of what the game's mindframe IC-wise is. Logs or network posts.

Ignore the anon that says we don't like newbies - if you want to app, then app. Newbies are great because they breathe new life into the game, and you never know what'll happen with each new wave of you guys.

I hope this helps a little, and good luck if you app!

I've only been in the game a few months and unfortunately, I'm not in it anymore, but hopefully I can give you some pointers so you won't make the same mistakes that I did.

I agree that your mileage kind of varies as far as backtagging and cross-canon CR and it also depends on what kind of character you app. I was there with a sort of bratty and kind of anti-social character which didn't really help me, but since I was joining an existing cast I was able to build some interactions with people from other canons through my canon CR (if that makes sense). Being persistent really helps though and try to be early to the CR memes so you can tag other people and have them tag you back as well. Following through on them is also a big thing and will probably help you solidify a lot of your budding CR.

Getting a plurk also helps, but really, just trying to reach out and not being shy about it would probably put your character out there a lot. Be sure you have enough time and dedication to do all of that though because I definitely didn't even though I thought I did.

Whatever the case, good luck and I hope you have fun there!

Ok, how about something more positive: which new characters are you most excited about?
