Rukia Kuchiki | Bleach

Either the Arrancar or the Fullbringer arc as canon point. Any help - specifically on the way she talks to people - would be appreciated.

Rukia's speech has this dichotomy of being proper and educated, but she also sounds rough and blunt depending on who she's talking to (Renji has noted that she "talks like a man", despite carrying herself like a noble). As a Kuchiki and later a lieutenant, she has a certain image to uphold but she's more casual around those she's familiar with (i.e. she calls Ichigo by name because she doesn't care, everyone else she addresses by surname, Byakuya is 'brother', etc).

Another thing to keep in mind when she's addressing others is that Rukia is not good at making friends and can be awkward and closed off, thanks to the triple-whammy of losing Renji, being sheltered by Byakuya, and killing Kaien. This may not be as notable by the Fullbring arc as she's in a position of authority, has overcome all that baggage and has come out of her shell, in a manner of speaking, but she's still more likely to keep strangers at a distance.

The only other advice I can think of atm is to keep in mind where Rukia came from. The biggest mistake I've seen players make is placing way too much emphasis on her relationship with Ichigo when most of Rukia's demeanor in the series is a result of what happened long before she met Ichigo. They're important to each other because they helped the other grow up and start to find themselves, and it's through Ichigo (and wacky circumstance that's not actually circumstance, thanks Aizen) that Rukia is able to reconcile with the 3 men who made the most impact in her life (again Renji, Byakuya and Kaien) and start to really make friends (like Orihime, whom she nearly died for). Also, she's a former street rat and a huge dork; she may carry herself nobly when she has to assert herself but she doesn't carry herself above others, and she has her quirks that come out when she's not in shinigami-duty mode.

I hope this helps, anon, Rukia is a great character I'd like to see around more!

+1

All of the above is good commentary. My one caveat is to beware the pitfall of overly callous and crude speech. It's a tendency I've seen in several Rukias in the past. She is more informal with Renji and Ichigo, and with those she's closer to, but outside of those two, we don't see her outright trash-talking almost ever. She keeps herself cold, cool, aloof and more than a bit blunt despite the politeness. Very 'business first, socializing later' with people she doesn't know.

If you can keep the trash talking to a minimum, I think it will help a lot.

I sometimes play Orihime, and I'd kill to play with a Rukia like this. A+++++++++++

One thing Ive noticed a lot of people who start out anime characters make the mistake in is the honorifics. Like the above anon has said, Rukia is rough here and there but also pretty formal. Most of the time her honorifics are limited to addressing senior officers, otherwise she sticks to last names (calling Orihime "Inoue" being an example of this.) I suppose it doesn't matter if you are going by the english dub. But yeah she can be shy and a bit awkward but also not too so. Don't be afraid to play up her love of stuffed animals! Also, don't be afraid to also have her talk roughly with someone she might not get along with or even someone she's starting to really get along with (calling them idiot etc.) but don't go overboard with it because she's not rude she's just... rough. Have fun with her art stuff and have fun with just her personality really. She's pretty easy going as far as Bleach characters go.
