just as a random aside - some Christians, even conservative Christians, interpret the "have dominion over the earth" bit in Genesis as God naming mankind the custodians of the earth, meaning that we are to care for his creation and see to its well-being, not exploit and abuse it. God gave us animals and the rest of nature "for our pleasure" (hurhurhur) not to use carelessly, but to protect and sustain so that future generations can continue to enjoy them. as such, animal rights and environmentalism are both completely in keeping with this interpretation, and no one advocating wanton cruelty or destruction could, by this definition, ever be considered a true follower of Christ.

you're right in proposing that fairly simple disclaimer and I'm definitely going to do those things.

in general, though, I wish it was as clear-cut as you're arguing it is, but I sincerely think it isn't. what I mean is, the IC/OOC line is much easier to separate on murder than it is on things like ableism, transphobia, racism and misogyny, because the gap between real life behaviour and fiction is, as a rule, much wider on the former issue than on the latter ones. prejudice is on a fundamental level expressed through the use of language, and since we are engaged in a hobby that consists entirely of the use of language, I feel personally responsible about being careful about how and where I use words.

this is literally the only thing that matters. a fictional character is just that - fictional, which means not real. which means that anything they do or say or any views they hold are, by default, not real. can people share opinions with their characters sometimes? of course, but it doesn't matter whether they do or not because they should be playing the character ic, and if it is ic for the character to do or say a certain thing, then how the player feels about said thing is irrelevant.
