Happy Holidays

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

any advice for confronting a player to figure out why they're suddenly obviously and consistently ignoring you, or should i just let it lie and stop reaching out. like if there's a fixable problem i'd like to fix it but in your opinion would it be better to just give them space?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-24 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
...would be nice if they had stuck to the dates on the calendar for those of us not in the game :\ I put in a returning character app on the 21st despite the page saying closed because... the calendar said open, and I sort of wanted Christmas reunions. Guessing that's noooot gonna happen.

it's not a kink but damn i wish i had a Regal from ToS to play off in memes or something

there's so much smut potential wasted but I don't have a muse for him at all

one day....

(Anonymous) 2013-12-24 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
have you tried pming them/contacting them some other way? if it's just not answering your tags there could be any number of reasons for that, but if they're blowing off every form of communication period then yeah i'd say just let it go and move on.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-24 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
depends on how important the situation is. if you don't care about the person/cr, then i'd ignore it and move on.

in the instance you feel it's worth pursuing, there isn't much advice to give. be polite and open. don't act entitled, interrogative or whiny. saying something like "hey, i noticed you've been ignoring me lately. is something wrong? if there is, i'd like to be able to help." given that it's dwrp, they might not answer truthfully; if they don't then there's nothing you can do but move on and let them do what they're going to do.

if you're worried about leaving people hanging, pump a few more easy tags into the boring threads and draw the threads to a proper conclusion.

Games are different because they're a more structured environment with a collective group of people who, by joining said game, basically agreed to tag a certain amount per month. Basically, unlike memes, you can expect one or more of the following:

1. A certain quota of tags expected out of people. Basically, if you're required to have one thread consisting of 15 tags, 8 from you, it's pretty unlikely that all threads are going to relentlessly get dropped left and right. Some? Yes. But it's more of a guarantee than you'd get from a meme.

2. Contact information clearly listed on the taken page, which gives you the option of contacting people to work stuff out. You're generally expected to list something that isn't just journal PMs and hope.

3. Sometimes games require people to actually list out their timezone on their app. It isn't everywhere, but I've seen a few that do.

4. Also, games tend to have a certain pace/consistency of tags, so you can look into it and go, "Oh, so, generally there's X posts per day and Y events per month." You know, you can get a general feel for what happens and when.

Yeah, people drop threads in games. It happens. But it also happens in memes, because if thread dropping didn't happen there we wouldn't be having this conversation in the first place. Thread dropping happens everywhere. I can also think of five games off of the top of my head with a reasonably sized not-North American playerbase. Also, you could post to ATP when it's next up and clearly state that you're from Switzerland or wherever and that you want a not-North American timezone friendly game.

No, no, that's not what being the hero of their own story means at all. It doesn't mean making them seem neutral. That would be defeating the point of the character in the first place.

Maybe it's the word "hero" throwing you off, so try "protagonist" instead. There are plenty of protagonists in fiction who are not good people. They don't have to be good, they just have to be understandable. We can relate to the worst people in fiction because their motives and goals are presented unflinchingly. They're allowed to be fully themselves, and everything they do, all the terrible things, all the mistakes they make, is a natural consequence of that. Many of the best villains are the ones we get.

If you understand the character and you can write them as terribly as they are, without covering up or excusing their failings, but just write them true to themselves... Then you're on the right track. No matter how unsubtle that turns out to be.

Hey there! Christmas reunions wouldn't have been possible for returning characters regardless of when they had opened. The original app period was going to be 12/15 - 12/29, which means characters would have rejoined the game after Christmas. Sorry!

I do apologize for not getting them open, and I'm very glad that you submitted when you did because I opened them the moment I got yours. (It's the only one so far.) The holidays are an extremely busy time for everyone, and that does include staff. It slipped all our minds to be honest, but we have them open now! I'll make a note in the OOC comm, though I was hesitant to make a third mod post in a row stating this as I didn't want to spam the OOC comm with too many mod posts and turn it into a wall of text.

i've had my character icly decline any possibility of their becoming a couple, actually. at this point, if i had my character stop to tell off theirs for throwing themselves at him whenever they did it, i'd pretty much have to tag that scenario out during every single one of our threads and i'd never get to the plot side of things (which is pretty much the only reason i tag them to begin with).

ignoring their shippy cues gets the job done. it doesn't always work, seeing how their character has on one occasion gone as far as starting to undress before mine, but most of the time, it gets the job done.

I see. That's very different than what I was "told" to do in the post calling me out... I was told not to even use the words like "evil" and to sound as neutral as possible.

I'm starting to see why calling them evil or irredeemable is wrong, but it just felt like they were telling me to write him in a way that would convince the uninitiated he's not a bad person... when he couldn't really do that when he was pretending to be on the side of the angels.

You've given me a lot to think about.

Thought so. I'm really digging them so far.

Also, he's in a few episodes of the short lived, but awesome, Green Lantern Animated Series. And he's pretty damn awesome in that.
