I'm interested in joining the Homestuck cast, but I've heard some scary stuff about them. Are they as bad as I think?

I'm not sure what you've heard at all, but the Homestuck cast is great! The only character I've even seen mentioned lately is the Dave, who your mileage may vary on, but everyone else is fantastic in my experience.

Even the Karkat? I had to doublecheck they weren't a Kankri, lol.

The Karkat is considered one of the best in the cast and is by far one of the most popular characters in the game. Their sense of humor also represents the rest of the Homestucks very well, so if you're not a fan then you might want to try a cast elsewhere.

... That was meant as genuine advice and not as overdefensive bitching, haha. I just realized it could be taken either way, so! Yeah.

i'm not sure i'd agree karkat is one of the most popular characters in the game, or even the best in the cast? i see other people namedropped more often as being favorites.

It's a couple of pretty specific people who namedrop favorites, probably. There are a lot of really good and probably fairly popular characters who never get dropped. The comments he gets to his posts and CR meme comments are a better indicator than that, and he gets a lot of them.

Personally I think he is really fun to thread with, and if the Kankri thing implies OP was one of the anons on page 5, that thread was taken out of context. He rants about a lot more than triggers, and I think he has a pretty Karkat-like attitude.
