Yeah, I feel like Minori and Touya's background would've added a touch more drama to the scene! I felt like the novel was a lot more intense both because of that and because we were inside Minori's head and seeing her thoughts. ): The anime did convey some of her feelings but...

Personally I felt like the episode packed way too much together and killed the suspense/tension of some of the best parts (the meeting with the Crescent Moon Alliance! I felt like that was way more dramatic in the novel as well). I was really hoping they'd expand on the party because it felt a little too short in the novel, and there was that really cute party color spread... Sigh.

Yeah, I found the system a little weird, too. I mean, people adding each other without consent is already a bit ??? especially since you have to be within range anyway (am I the only one who found this an odd pair of requirements). Though, if you can add someone without their say-so, they'd need a block function to remove you properly. IDK why they can't block people, that's definitely a weird part of the system. The whole system is a bit wonky, to the point where you feel a little like it was made that way just for drama...

Aww yes Black Shiroe is just great, great fun and we'll be seeing a lot more of him and I can't wait. Ahahahaha I know, right. Flash us with your glasses more, Shiroe!

In a bit of devil's advocate for the "vis-a-vis friending system," I feel like it's a bit in line with Elder Tale. Because they use that "half Gaia" system for the world and the setting is based off of a post-apocalypse Earth, they probably want to go for a kind of... "authentic?"... feel to things, so it's likely that they want their players to have as many face-to-face opportunities as possible. It could also be possible that unfriending works like on Plurk: even if you defriend someone, you can still see their timeline. So Serara may have actually unfriended her friend in that one guild, but if they didn't unfriend her...

That said, the system makes sense in that if it wasn't in place, Shiroe and others like him would be flooded with constant asks. He was bugged enough before when people walked up to him to ask him questions... He'd probably have quit if they could message him, too.

Though, again, that's not quite how it works in an MMO... and, yes, it DOES seem to be built for the drama! But some of that's the point--if Elder Tale were built to be just like a real world MMO, we'd lose a lot of the drama. I don't really mind suspending my disbelief for this reason. I mean, I did it with both .hack and SAO, where I constantly asked things like "But what if the internet cuts out?" and other nitpicky questions.

I also want to say that I liked how Minori's feelings were animated in her scene. Even if we didn't hear her thoughts, I felt it was painfully clear what she was thinking--her hand over her mouth, the tears, and her look said (to me, at least) "I want to say something SO BADLY, but I don't think I should." I think that, minus her thoughts, we got to really hear that dead convo time between them, which made the conversation good for the anime.

I do agree, though, that they could have probably split it into two episodes. At first I thought that they could have just cut some scenes, but in the end they were all pretty important, so doubling is the better way to go. But I don't think we lost a whole, whole lot, and I'm looking forward to seeing how they handle the next part.

Oh, and one more thing (on a HUGE list of things)... Now that I've read further ahead, I now get the significance of that one scene with Shiroe in the OP. Now every time I see it, I get all tingly... Waah.

Oh, you've got a point. If it's supposed to be in line with the Half-Gaia Project, then in a way it makes sense to force players to travel and hang out face-to-face, especially if at the time they had town gates and fairy rings to help them out. :) Good point about poor Shiroe too, pffff.

One thing that still bugs me is that even in Plurk you can set your profile to private if you don't want people to be able to see your timeline! And I'm still baffled by the lack of block function. There's a lot of broken pieces in Elder Tale that are floating around making it 'not like a real-world MMO' and it seems like the best way to explain them might be with the fact that it's a weird potpourri of 'real world' and 'MMO'.

I do think they did good conveying the non-conversation! Haha, I'm just ruined by the novel. |D And yeah, I don't think they could've cut anything from that episode, which is why I was hoping they'd add stuff. Next episode should be fun. 8D 8DD It looks like we might get a little elaboration -- I'm actually looking forward to the anime's treatment because wow the novel actually drew the suspense out for literal centuries.

:O Which scene?!
