but that's a good sign, anon. most people who actually play him in a game spend all their time defending WHY HE WAS RIGHT over acknowledging that, yeah. he' kinda a dick.

I think the main thing to remember when playing Snape is the balance between how he legitimately is a resentful bitter dick who took his frustrations of being bullied out on his tormentor's son...but who also made an effort to protect that same boy (albeit in a very heavy-handed, abrupt and jerkass way). And managed to stay on the "good" side while being a douchebag, taking a lot of risks along the way.

Another thing that's important to remember is that he really does have some prejudice against muggles, even if he'd been in love with a muggleborn witch.

That being said, in a game where nobody knows who he is, he is cunning enough to not completely alienate people that he'd find useful. He'd probably gravitate toward people using magic of some sort, or who display powers openly over those who have no powers, but if someone was sufficiently intelligent and well connected, he'd probably still find a way to lurk around that person and be opportunistic.
