oh trust me anon, i was already planning not to play 'classy lesbian' kanaya! that's pretty much the first step with her, and i've got no intention to play any watered down fandom version of anyone

One thing I've always done is treat the idealized classy, rational, mature image as the one she tries to project, but she isn't very good at it. She invests a lot of energy into how she presents herself and is very self-conscious about the ways it falls short. She isn't a stoic so much as someone trying very hard to act like one. She's not exactly a happy person, either, so don't be afraid to make her come off as a bit frustrated or catty.

She has a lot of anger and depression that doesn't really rise to the surface very often, and she tends to deflect from her feelings more often than she's honest about them. A lot of it is kind of a defense mechanism, because she often feels taken for granted and takes for granted that she'll be taken for granted, so she doesn't trust other people to handle her feelings properly. It's not really a healthy attitude to take toward anything, and keep in mind that she's not always right about it either! there are a lot of things she'll get wrong, so don't be afraid to run with that. She is intelligent, but she's not always as smart as she is stubborn, because she thinks she knows better than most people. This can result in a lot of misunderstandings, but kanaya's funniest moments tend to be when she misunderstands things, but with how dry her sense of humor is there can be wiggle room in whether she's taking something too literally or making a joke.

And it can get exhausting to play sometimes, but her codependency can't really be forgotten. She doesn't really like being in the spotlight, no matter how much her glow makes her look like one, but she does need other people to need her. With a lot of people, it's the only way she can be sure she'll in any way matter to them, and she doesn't know what to do with herself when she thinks she's irrelevant. She doesn't know what to do with herself most of the time in general, honestly. Much of her life is spent a bit out of her element while trying to keep up and not letting on.

Sorry if this was all a lot of rambling and not really coherent, but I hope it helps!

The best example for your second paragraph is to reread Kanaya's first conversation with John's "Rose." Kanaya started with a plan and John's pranking thoroughly disrupted it.
