Uhh

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

When peole give me shitty, bland, thread-killing tags that are literally impossible to respond to because they lack anything resembling content. I sympathize with you if your character isn't a talker/socializer, but damn, man, at least give me a physical action or some introspection to work with.

you can't really work with introspection... unless your character is a mind reader.

I can at least use it as a general guideline on where to push the thread with the next tag. I can also use it to give me ideas for my own counter intro-spection.

...introspection isn't meant to be like dialogue, though. you don't "answer" to it, or have your character think about pretty much the same topic, unless it's the one talked about, or something.

i don't know about you, but i use introspection as little narrations for what direction i want the thread to go into.

i'm not going to wax poetic about my character pondering his existence and the complexities of life only for him to suggest they order pizza and spend the night watching finding nemo.

Introspection also can give some clues about body language and expressions that might be missing from the icon and descriptions since no one is going to be standing or sitting there perfectly still and that can hint to at least an emotion they are feeling. That can also help with a direction to move things in. Like if the character starts thinking about something bad, they probably aren't looking relaxed anymore, might stiffen up a bit or seem anxious, that can clue in the other character to maybe change the topic or see if something's wrong. And if in doubt about what might show, you can always shoot a quick PM to the other player to make sure it's all right to pick up on certain things.

Introspection is fun to read, though. I get bored by threads that are pure dialogue and action... they just feel flat. And introspection gives me insight into the character's background and the player's interests, so I can gently guide the thread in more exciting directions. Maybe my character can "accidentally" drop some useful information in their dialogue.

i think introspection should be like seasoning: little stated (well, thought) outright can go a long way. i would much rather you tell me a character's voice quivered slightly and that she had to grasp her small cup in both hands to make sure she didn't drop it, rather than have her think about how she was shocked, so shocked, let me tell you how shocked she was.

i kind of agree except about introspection. some thoughts are great, but there are people out there that go so overboard with it and still give you little to write with.

you mention a bee buzzing by and they manage to include two character childhood stories involving bees, dissect beehive mentalities and make their character crave honey. but the action equivalent my character sees in the end is [quirks lips]. well, thanks.

i like to have something to reply to, but fuck, i'll read about those childhood stories

i fucking love introspection. reading it is fun for me

Go read fanfic, then. I'm here to RP. A page full of introspection is just a fanfic drabble with nothing to work with.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-11 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
uh, not if there's something to reply to along with introspection

if you don't include introspection in your tags you're probably a bad writer, sorry to say
