Joel | The Last of US
(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Joel | The Last of US
Example; they reach the Capital, Tess is scrambling to search through the bodies, and Joel says, "What are you doing, Tess?". Or "What are we doing here? This is not us."
Or "She's not breathing."It seems tricky sometimes because the drawl isn't always there, especially in the more serious moments. I'd say just go with what you feel sounds right in whatever scenario he's put in?
What canon point did you have in mind for him?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)I'm thinking about taking him just as they're discovered by the Fireflies. I don't really want to play him end-game because I feel like there's a lot less chance of development there (he makes a choice and that choice sort of cements his path.)
How do you balance out the whole... I guess, Joel as a generally level headed pragmatic survivalist with fatherly protective feelings toward Ellie and Joel the crazy man who, lbr, kills like 90% of the people he meets?

Let it come here and there naturally, but don't try to force the Southern out of him constantly because his character focus is elsewhere and his accent is just a little icing around it. Not to be nitpicky and scare you or anything!

I wouldn't overdo it, considering his accent is very light, but you can convey a lot through word choice when it's appropriate to the situation.
Depending on what canon point you're going with, remember that Joel is still a very ruthless man, but isn't cruel for pleasure. He doesn't like being awful and doesn't seek violence when another way would serve. He's calm, even in the moments he goes full throttle, and his quiet fury makes the times he IS desperate and worried come through as a much bigger deal.
Joel regrows a conscience through the game but in quieter ways. Notice how he treats Sam, compared to how Henry treats Sam. He's never one for false praise and doesn't outright say what he's feeling, but he still manages to let the kid know he's doing a good job and encourage him.
He always gives people credit where it's due and doesn't seem like he's one to judge, possibly because of who HE is now.
Joel is waaaaay actions and gestures over words. He's not much of a talker but he likes to listen. Notice how later in the game he puts forth the effort to engage Ellie, too, because he knows there's stuff wrong and her silence is making him uncomfortable. He tries for the people he cares about, has a sense of humor, and even though he's cynical, he's still got a heart. And he's protective of that heart. He's worried about it breaking again, but he NEEDS something to keep him going, always.
Re: Joel | The Last of US
Joel reminds me of that one quiet, hardworking guy at the office who comes in, does his own shit, never asks for help, and goes home at the end of the day. But do him one favor, and he'll keep an eye on you. And in the moment you're really struggling with your own work, he'll step in and give you a hand.
Should you then choose to develop this, you'd have the best person possible in your corner. Whenever you're in a jam you can flat out rely on him. (Marlene even references this in the game. It's the whole reason for the plot. Tommy said Marlene could rely on Joel.)
And then, from that moment on, you'll have an awesome ally. So long as you watch his back he'll faithfully watch over yours, so long as you never screw him over. That's the important thing. Never screw him over. If he values you, and trusts you, that's gold. But if you fuck him over -- just. Don't fuck him over. Don't do it.
