it is fucking ridiculous. most places expect unpaid internships nowadays for things like that, which is utterly unobtainable for most, especially if you live in a country that's centralised (which the UK definitely is).

i remember when i had my first job, my mother was already complaining about the cycle of "can't get a job without exp, need exp to get job" and it *wasn't even this bad then*. it was before the crash. nowadays it's basically a free-for-all, and if there's anything more disheartening than the jobsearch, i really can't think of it.
