I threw my pie for you

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

look i dont give a rats ass if the mods spam rpanons or wankgate. i dont really care what they do in their own spaces, i'd just like a mod plurk to read like a mod plurk and the same goes for event announcements. its a personal preference.

And I have no real problem with you having that personal preference, anon, but there's a difference between preference and saying it objectively looks bad and childish.

Also I am pretty sure they don't spam rpanons or wankgate but if you've got links then I'll stand corrected.

im not the OP anon so i dont really know where theyre talking about. i personally think it objectively looks bad and childish because lets face it it is not mod standard and the emotes are commonly associated with passive-aggression and being generally dismissive. but ok. ill mind my words in the future.

this dogpiling over modship not being a job is a little ludicrous considering my fairly benign complaint though. no youre all very right its not but it is a position where your words and how you say them do affect how people see you and your game. which is actually how this entire culture and hobby works.

Which emotes are you talking about? Genuinely curious here. I haven't noticed any that are commonly associated with passive-aggression and dismissiveness but maybe I'm not paying enough attention.

imo :) is the most pa smiley to ever pa because of overuse with stuff like 'okay well i'll keep it in mind i guess :)' 'you're welcome to your opinion :)'

it's the low-effort smiley you pop in there when you want to look like you give a damn but are really feeling dismissive of the whole thing basically

^^; is another one that tends to read kind of like 'i don't agree with you at all so i'm going to try to look pleasant yet mildly distressed and hope you shut up'

some people use c: in a pa way but mostly they seem to go for :), the c: ime has become like the actually-happy version of :)

itt: anon overanalyzes their experiences with emote use, but :) is hands-down passive aggressive (also good for creepy. you smell nice. :) i like your new curtains open them more often. :) and so forth)

Hmm, thanks. Gotta say, I think it's silly to label the emotes themselves passive aggressive/dismissive/whatever when looking at how they're used in specific plurks is a lot more likely to give you an accurate read, but we can agree to disagree.

See, that's where your problem lies. It is not in the emote itself (which are only two or three characters at most and are used to delineate a facial expression), it is in the fact that you are mind-reading the intent behind them. It is not that they tend to read a certain way; it is that you read them that way.

Now, context plays a large role in this, of course. But someone who doesn't associate :) with passive aggression may not read the smiley the same way you do even in the same context.

same anon as above

because i can't edit: clarifying that this is in general, i'm just not even touching the original discussion here but i have had the conversation about 'what smilies read as pa' entirely too many times for one person.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-09 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh stop whining.

Again, this is their hobby, not their job. You are not their customer, or their employer.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-09 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
ok? all im saying is i hate the overuse of smilies. not that theyre horrible people who cant do their jobs and shouldnt be running a game. learn to pick your battles for christsakes.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-09 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Except running a game is not a job, moron. It's a hobby.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-09 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
have you ever had a hobby? a group hobby that at least at some point involved other people? because they all have expectations, some of them really weird ones (you have not seen weird expectations until youve been in a quilting group) and plenty of drama over them.

This is the same thing. running a game has certain expectations of behavior and the like that people WILL react to.

doesnt mean the mods have to listen to it, because just like with a real life hobby, you can tell people with problems to fuck off and get out of your basement, or just ignore them.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-09 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
ok let me explain it like this. i play a tabletop game with my best friends. i expect them to act a certain way while we game. such as not having too much tabletalk or completely fucking up the plotline because they want to be the hero. or having the dm act unprofessionally by favoring one player over the other, being flippant when bringing up concerns, or just generally being annoying as shit. we fight, we bicker, we whine about things behind their backs - but at the end of the day we still game and have fun together. thats how all fucking things work, rl or rp.

saying "its not a job" is not a blanket excuse that makes people stop being annoyed or put out and its a shitty one that hurts your argument more than anything else because youre basically saying theyre fucking up but its ok because they dont get paid for it - rather than acknowledging that they might do a thing that annoys or puts people off from the game gracefully. nothing puts anyone off from rabid whiteknights who cant pick their battles because those, unlike someone getting irritated at stupid smilies they hate, are actually damaging to the game.

btw just to clarify i dont think the mods are fucking up, i think they do a thing that annoys me and some other people i know but theyre damn good mods and having one grievance with one thing they do does not mean i hate them.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-09 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
No you just want to come here and anonymously drag them through the mud because they're having fun and you don't like it.

i am looking for deets because tbh my favorite part of rp these days is schadenfreude. i can't find an event announcement that's spammy or stupid and most of the mod plurks always have stupid commentary inside, but the posts themselves all seem fine. it's always links to new game related stuff. are you talking about the stupid pusheen Asgard emote they use sometimes?

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2013-08-09 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
hdu diss pusheen. That emote is cute.
