Adult (25+), any medium or gender OK. Sarcastic/teasing badass with a squishy side who's bad at feelings.

Bonus points for badassery in the form of having some kind of unusual talent (fighting, medicine, music, magic, deduction, hacking, whatever); buddy-cop dynamic with one or more other characters in canon; SF/fantasy canons; and tragic backstory explaining the "bad at feelings" element, especially if they go out of their way to conceal the tragic parts.

Jade Curtiss would suit you well. He's 35, well-known as the king of sarcasm, isn't all that squishy but is incredibly bad with feelings.

Bonus points:

- He's a genius in canon, having invented fomicry at the age of 9 (Sort of like cloning)
- Unusually high aptitude in fonic artes (Think magic)
- His canon (Tales of the Abyss) is fantasy
- Very tragic backstory which does not explain why he's bad at feelings (He's always been this way), but he does hide it

... you know, I've seen some Jades around and he struck me as a type I'd like to play! I'll have to look into ToA. It's PS2, right?

Thanks, anon!

(Anonymous) 2013-08-08 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It's PS2 but there's also an anime and there's a 3DS version. You're welcome by the way, I'm a former Jade player who may be picking him up again and it's always lovely to see more of him around!

3DS? I'm sold. I need to get more use out of mine. Thank you again!

Boone from Fallout New Vegas has every element except for the buddy cop partner, and Mordecai and Lilith from Borderlands have every element minus the tragic backstory part.

Ooooh.

Borderlands is something I've really wanted to get into... I'm more of an RPG player than a first-person shooter type, though (shitty at navigating 3D maps.) How hard is it to play?

I'll admit right now, neither are particularly easy games, you're expected to move a lot while shooting, and the first one was notorious for not having an always onscreen minimap (which was fixed in the second game - which can be played on its own, but you'd miss out on the callbacks. Kinda like Portal 1/2). There's co-op of course, though the game slightly raises the difficulty to match. For what it's worth both games regularly go super cheap (like <15$) on Steam.

Mordecai gets pretty fucking tragic in BL2, though.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-08 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely, but that's more of a tragic story than a tragic backstory.

Good point. It doesn't really apply to OP's request, but I can't play through that part without tearing up a little.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-08 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Gimme a witty, sarcastic woman who slings one liners like they're going out of style. Preferably 20s or older. Rogue-ish, fun, and not annoying. I'm not terribly picky about medium, but I don't play around with animanga much.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-08 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Oops, put this in the wrong place.

Re: ITT: CHARACTER RECOMMENDATIONS

i'm unsure about the squishy side, but there's definitely an argument to be made for bad at feelings

either one of the lutece twins from bioshock infinite (the other twin would provide the buddy dynamic)

they're brilliant physicists who figured out the whole quantum mechanics thing in the late 18/early 1900's and they simultaneously exist in all possible timelines.

as far as tragedy, or at least difficulty goes, backstory wise, rosalind was a brilliant woman scientist in a world and time that was not particularly friendly to woman scientists, and robert is...technically not supposed to exist? and they've been through a lot of shit to be together.

...oooh, that sounds fascinating.

(ALL THESE VIDEO GAMES I SUDDENLY NEED TO PLAY.)

it is!

i will say the ~mindblowing endgame~ is way less interesting and more pretentious than i expected

but the luteces were the silver lining in that dark cloud, for me

and they banter so well

and they're such dicks in the best possible way

Kate Beckett from Castle fits that to a tee, with Nathan Fillion-- I mean, Castle, as her buddy, sad tragic backstory involving her mother, and general badassery included.

Also Sherlock from Elementary

Re: ITT: CHARACTER RECOMMENDATIONS

(Anonymous) 2013-08-08 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I considered taking up Sherlock, but there are so many of them out there. Kate, though... that sounds very interesting! I don't have nearly enough female characters on my roster, and I've heard good things about that show.

I'll be looking into it. Thank you!

I really enjoy Castle, for all that there are some teeth-grittingly cheesy and ridic parts in it, as par the course for comedy-crime shows.

Castle is one of those shows I can watch over and over again. Even though I know all the aspects of the case-of-the-week, the character dynamics are so much fun: some parts dramatic, some parts sweet, and some just plain goofy. It all meshes well to make for a cast I care about and can enjoy watching them interact again and again.

My favorite moment ever though is in season one's Halloween episode. Nathan Fillion is adorable as simply adorable as Castle.

seconding Jade! here are a couple of others:

malcolm reynolds from firefly; he's not entirely bad at feelings but he is when it comes to his love interest. otherwise, captain of a rag tag crew of mercenaries in space, he has ~tragic past~ which crops up sometimes but he's generally light-hearted, quippy, and sarcastic. he tries to act like he's ruthless but has a honorable streak which occasionally screws him over, and is very protective of his crew though rarely sentimental (though a little with kaylee; his little sister figure). he's a talented leader, though otherwise though he's good at fighting and other things i'd say his biggest talent is thinking on his feet and squeezing out of tight scrapes. his dynamics with the other crew are similar to buddycop but it's a little different since he's technically the leader. there is a lot of quipping with the other crew members, though.

nicholas d. wolfwood from trigun; anime version. he's a priest (worst priest ever) that acts silly and lighthearted generally, but it's a front for a super skilled gunsman who has been trained to be an assassin from a young age. Also angry, sarcastic, jaded, and believes killing is the only way to deal with things. He does assassin/mercenary work in exchange for keeping his church/orphanage safe and develops a buddy-cop dynamic with the main character (which involves a guy roughhousing or bickering). he has a massive soft spot for kids and a lot of secret internal conflict about the blood on his hands. he tries to guide the other characters even though his ideals frequently clash with them. tragic past.

manga version could work too, except that he's actually a teenager who has been physically aged up through experiments and looks/acts like he's 30+ most of the time. the manga version is also a lot more angry and violent (and he's even worse at feelings than anime counterpart, but the massive soft spot for kids and trying to guide others still applies. so does the inner conflict. even more tragic past than anime)

possibly axel from kingdom hearts. very sarcastic, badass, quips a lot. he doesn't have a specific buddy cop dynamic (except maybe with Riku) but he does end up taking these kids under his wing and failing at looking after them. He is somewhat manipulative and secretive and bad at feelings despite squishiness. He teases a lot and i think you could count him as tragic past considering he lost his heart and all.

also seconding Kate Beckett, I didn't think of her but she definitely fits.

... well, I'll put extra weight on Kate Beckett, then

on the grounds that you just named two characters I play and one I seriously considered

Crap, I've got a type.
