Badly's an adverb

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

CHARACTERS FROM 80s-MID90s CANONS

Novels, movies, cartoons, anime, whatever. It's more of question I have, which is that if the series is taking place in the "modern day", do you conform to what you believe the character would be like if the series came out today or consider them to be from the time period that the canon came out during?

To put it in a less confusing way, do the characters from Kimagure Orange Road or say, Boy Meets World get confused when looking at cell phones and how far computers and technology has come?

I'd play it as what "modern day" would be for that show

Playing a character clearly from the 80s as someone from 2013 seems weird to me and more an AU then anything else.

I would say yes. A lot of the plots, even on silly sitcoms, would have been different with modern technology. The first Die Hard movie, for example, would have gone down very differently if there had been cell phones handy. It's not a huge technology curve to overcome in a game. I usually have a character from a sitcom pulled from the year that the episode aired (unless, of course, the date is stated as something different in the canon itself.)

In the right place this time

I take them from the canon's time period unless the game specifies that everyone is updated to the current standards of modern technology. If you play someone from 20-30 years ago like they're from today you're not being IC. It's lime someone else said. It's AU.

There were cell phones in the 80s. They were carried around in cases about the size of clunky briefcases and ridiculously huge. I'd advise doing a tech history search for anything you're in doubt about.
