Badly's an adverb

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

i have a couple general "universes" i work with, since my shit's more or less built from the ground up, and depending on which one i'm feeling at the time, i look at stuff that reminds me of or thematically relates to them

songs, lots of poetry (generally really visceral, imagery heavy stuff since that's what works for me), novels, movies, stuff like that

lots of time writing down random ideas and chewing over old ones, rewriting things, throwing things out, mulling over how things work and better, more interesting, less cliche ways for them to work

i can say that putting together visualosities folders has helped me a lot! and when you're just cruising for something to do, go and look at other peoples' visualosities entries

except for visualosities, i've never felt the need to make those, but i guess i could try sometime!

it's pretty fun! for me it's mostly something to waste time on when i'm bored, but when looking at someone's oc, it can really give the viewer an idea for the "mood" of the character or get them interested. mine aren't that fancy or poignant, but i think they're still pretty cool looking.

also: hipster coolkid brownie points.

i sift through the image association memes on bakerstreet when i'm bored to see if there's anything there that i like; you ought to try it sometime, anon!

everywhere! what a lot of the above anon said, and also random conversations i've had irl. i'm not a very social person and a lot of offline chatting i do is one-off stuff in coffee shops, while waiting for the bus, etc. and i have the mark of That Person that random strangers come up to and tell their life stories. some of these people are genuinely interesting and often i incorporate bits and pieces of them into my characters.

where do you guys get your inspiration?

I recently found this nice tip from 'Handbook to Roleplaying':

http://www.angelfire.com/tx/afira/creation.html

"Another suggestion is to grab a dictionary, pop it open and let your finger fall somewhere, and repeat. Choose about 10 or more items, and make youself put them together in a story. It can be items that mean something special to your character like a rabbit they had when they were five. Always ask, "How did it affect my character?", "Why would they remember it?", or "What happened to that object or feeling?""

I'm going to try this method with my OCs.
