Badly's an adverb

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

characters who have actual positions of responsibility. sure, they might have responsibilities in canon, but in most jamjars, there's nothing for them to do.

other players usually make it miserable to have a character in a position of authority. i did it once and now avoid it at all costs.

you can play characters with responsibilities in non-jamjar games. or, well, you could if there were more than a handful of non-jamjar games to choose from.

Teachers Master & Mentor figures

i still aspire to properly pick up Gandalf or Obi-Wan Kenobi in a game someday

but i figure they're such well-grounded and static characters at the canon points i'm eyeing that anything on the development front's going to be a super slow burn, so that's going to be pretty different. i usually play characters with a lot of potential for growth, instead of characters that make it their job to help others do the growing. maybe that's why there aren't so many of these kinds around?

Another thing you can do is have a character that could still fill the role of a mentor because of his age, but be able to be taught on other matters himself. Like if you were a Luke Skywalker by the end of the trilogy mentoring someone, but still had a post-death Obi-Wan Kenobi helping him out and guiding him, as an example. It's what I did with two characters, and their development has been a lot of fun.

Curiously enough, the opposite is the same for me: I've played characters that have served as mentors of sorts, but have still managed to grow. I've personally wanted to play characters that have a lot of potential to grow within a given setting, but instead of already being heroes in need of mentors, that would instead be a character that will need to become one.

the absolutely unrepentant bad guy

rapists, drug lords, evil politicians, whatever, just criminals who do crime!

i know why there aren't a lot around, and i also know that the ones who are have to be watered down for rpability. it just makes me sad that games can't just have a one-off villain plot where a bad guy goes nuts, takes down a shit ton of the good guys, then gets blown up or whatever
