Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. Re: America Chavez and Hispanic Characters

1. America is very lucky in that she's one of the characters that DOESN'T have a lot of backstory. For America herself, the only other thing she's been in is the Acts of Vengeance miniseries (and she has no backstory there either, sorry nonnie.) It honestly isn't that good and she has possibly the worst costume in the history of the planet, but it's 5 issues and an easy read. As for YA context, I'd recommend reading Loki's run in Journey Into Mystery (JIM 622 to 646, also written by Gillen), as they give context into Loki's position/actions into his motives and will also break your heart. For the rest of the gang, I'd at least rec reading the first two volumes of Young Avengers: Young Avengers Presents is hit or miss (but at least read #6, the Kate Bishop issue, cause it's GREAT) and Children's Crusade is a BIG base breaker (personally, I hate it.)

2. Gillen said somewhere that the random Spanish is editorially mandated (I can't find the interview or I'd link it.) Use it sparingly, and don't jam it in every other sentence-she seems to use it mostly for emphasis than for casual conversation. As for her background, I'd recommend just keeping it as generic as possible-which is easy because America isn't the sort of touchy feely type of character. She keeps herself at a distance from the rest of YA, she can easily keep her distance from others in the game. As for the Latinaness of her personality, it seems that Gillen isn't focusing that much on that aspect of her personality and is instead focusing a bit more on the multidimensional multiverse part (granted, I haven't read YA 8.) If you aren't comfortable focusing heavily on that part of her personality, I think you can rp her without focusing too much on it.

anyway, best of luck playing her! She's super cool and I'd love to see more of her ingame. c:

1. I've managed to track down all but one issue of Vengeance (#3), so hopefully I'll be able to get that all read soon. I don't like the looks of the art or America's design in it, but I'm sure it'll still be good to add to the foundation of the character. As for the rest, thanks for the issue numbers on JIM! That makes it much clearer what I should go out and look for. I'm not sure how much I'll be able to read of either it or the previous YA series right away (especially when I hear that parts of it might be hate-worthy), but hopefully I can chug through a good chunk of both once I've caught up on my current pull list (orz y so many good comics rn sob sob).

2. That explains a lot if it's editorially mandated. Hearing that honestly makes me feel a lot more comfortable settling on a voice for America. Reading over the issues again just now, I agree, it definitely does seem like she uses words like "chico" for emphasis, like when she's non-plussed and wants to put an extra dig in on the person she's talking to (*cough*Loki*cough*). With that in mind, I wouldn't be surprised if she has barely any accent to speak of, which makes sense considering all the places and realities she's probably dipped her toes into over the years. I still might like to engage with the Latina side of her character at some point since it seems wrong to ignore it altogether, but you're right, I would be much more comfortable just focusing on the parts of America that America herself wants to focus on. Namely the kicking of butts and inter-dimensional barriers. Aww yeah.

Thanks for the recommendations and advice! It was very reassuring, and hopefully if I keep my guts up I can put her somewhere in the near future.

I've got #3-if you wanna drop me a sock I can upload it for you. c:

and dude, don't worry about chugging through YA: it's really short. The first two volumes (which...are pretty much all of the Young Avengers canon) are only about 12ish issues total. There are a few crossovers with the Runaways, but you don't have to read them unless you really want to.

Oo, sweet. I will do that later today when I'm back at my own computer.

And haha considering the size of my unread pull list pile, 12 issues is a lot. XD But that is definitely shorter than I expected! That might still be doable! Thanks!

OP here! You can PM the link to this journal. Actually, if you have the whole mini, that would be great too. Having the digital copies for reference and icon-making is always handy.
