Rundown:
rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.
Rules:
Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

Alchoholics & Characters who are known to drink a lot

(Anonymous) 2013-07-27 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)In an RP setting, it's important to look at your character and suss out their drinking habits and how those habits would impact other characters. Are they drinking heavily everyday? Are they binging for 48 hours, then functioning more or less normally the rest of the week? What kind of drunk are they? Happy/sad/flirty/angry/sleepy/etc.? How does that impact their drinking schedule? How does their drinking impact the people in their life? If it's to the point that they may be starting fights or missing work or getting arrested, it may be worth it to you to contact other players to plot out a way to play out some of the potential consequences. Some other characters may react badly to alcoholism, so be prepared for there to be negative CR. Not everyone can be loving or supportive or turn a blind eye to destructive behavior, so keep that in mind.
It's important to remember that alcoholics do not always have the same behaviors or drinking patterns. Some alcoholics are more obvious while others are very good at masking their behavior. Not every alcoholic drinks every single day, sometimes their consumption is in the form of lost weekends or benders. When it comes to playing, you don't need to rely on the drunkard typical stereotypes. Unless they show signs of being such in canon, there's no reason to make them into a wild bar-hopper. Some alcoholics drink alone and do not seek out company while they drink. It all really depends on the person. I've heard from my meetings (and from my own experiences with the alcoholics in my life) that people's best and worst personality traits are amplified when they are drunk. If someone is naturally charismatic and funny, they may turn into a larger than life comedian, the obnoxious life of the party. If someone is shy, they may come out of their shell, or they may turn inward and seek solitude completely. If they normally have anger problems, drinking may send them off the deep end into rageville. I would shy away from giving them traits while intoxicated that they would never have while sober, simply because it's not entirely realistic a lot of the time.
You may also wish to consider whether or not your character thinks they have a drinking problem, or if they feel any shame or guilt related to it. Some people are unabashed in their drinking while others feel badly about it (and others may not feel one way or the other.) Is there a family history of alcoholism? Or a personal history of abuse or depression? The answers to those questions may help you in deciding how your character perceives their own issues with alcohol.
