I think a rut of some people fall into with Cloud is thinking that the way he acts in ACC is the way he always acts. To an extent that's true in some areas (like with the kids) but he's not a mopey emo. He's a man that's been dealing with survivor's guilt for the past two years, who was finally feeling like maybe his life was getting on track (you can read Case of Tifa to get a little bit more of the struggle to be normal, to even know what being 'normal' was after being stuck in a tube for five years and then suddenly being thrown into being a hero and then suddenly having it all over and now he's supposed to just lead an every day life). He's dealing with a terminal kid he's adopted that he's sure Aerith sent him to let him make up for his 'sins' by finding a way to heal except he can't seem to find an answer and then suddenly he comes down with it too. It's a helpless, useless feeling. The Cloud in ACC is really a guy at his lowest point, not a guy that's acting the way he always does. He loves his family and he cares about his friends and he's supposed to be able to save them except once again it looks like he's not going to be able to. Cloud's built a lot of his life on 'if I can be strong enough I can protect the people that mean something to me'.

If you're writing him after the geostigma, you should watch the phone clip from Dirge. You can find it on youtube easily. It takes place about a year after the geostigma and I think it really shows a lot more of the dorky Cloud that he is when he's not in the middle of dying. And I also think it shows that he's, if not healed entirely from his past, healing (also I love seeing the original three back together in battle - Cloud, Tifa, Barret but that's just me). Cloud's personality has always been a stubborn, keep trying even when he falls down or fails. And remember - he never said he wanted to be a hero. He always wanted to be a protector instead. I think it shows a lot of his personality. He's 'people he cares about' centered. And he picks up people to care about pretty easily. That last part is handy if you plan on playing him in games.

On a final note it might help to find other FFVII players to rp with in memes or dear mun or something. If they're good rpers they're rping people that know Cloud and it might help you test out his voice better. All the ones I've run into are friendly and easy to play with. Don't be afraid to PM someone if you like their version of a character and ask for a tag. You can also watch other Clouds and see what rings true to you in their characterization and what doesn't.

As someone who doesn't play Cloud, but plays some of his close canonmates, this is all wonderful advice. And I can personally say that I'm always happy to help people voicetest, and everyone I know who rps any of Cloud's close canonmates would be happy, too. Just poke us, anon. ♥

Thank you for putting into words why I hate the bashing of ACC!Cloud when really, he's got a million and one reasons to be depressed. Like, seriously, thank you. You have put into words exactly my thoughts on him.
