Couldn't kill one of the alphas because they're still needed. Isaac? Well, he's bringing in viewers at the moment. Derek? Already done the death thing a few episodes ago. Ms Blake? Still need to push that love interest thing.

Boyd was pretty much the 'only' option. And he fits into that horror movie cliche they're going for. The flirty blonde dies, the black guy dies, and the white guy manages to live a little longer.

i got suckered by the reveal of some of his backstory, since it was all very mysterious and vague

i thought for sure they were going to keep him around so they could flesh it out the rest of the way :\

i was more convinced it was going to be Danny that got the short straw, because he's still not a main character but he's been more relevant this season with his connection to the alpha twin so idk

That was your first mistake. Believing that they'd actually flesh out a character before getting rid of them.

Erica didn't get anything. And they had originally planned to just kill the two straight off at the end of S2 so, Boyd lived past expectations.

As for the Danny note. I get the feeling that he's less around to be plot relevant and more around to be the gay romance.

Boyd's actor was having scheduling issues too.

And yet MTV literally moved filming back to work around Dylan's filming scheduled. I know he's actually a major character but, surely if they worked around one actor, they could have done it around another.

Stiles is less 'a major character' and more 'the show would die without him'. But I do agree that that doesn't make it any less shitty. There's other routes to have an actor leave a show other than killing the character, but that's the method Teen Wolf seems to default to. I think Jackson only survived it by the fact it wasn't confirmed if he was gone or not until after they'd wrapped S2. I'm wondering what Cora's fate is going to be at this point, too.

Willing to bet that if Dylan leaves, since his acting career actually seems to be going somewhere, he'll be one of the characters that doesn't die.

Honestly with Boyd and Erica, by the end of S2, they were reduced to plot points instead of characters. They died to give Derek a motive.

to be fair, Dylan's working on a movie that takes up maybe a month or two of his time. The actors for Erica, Boyd, and Jackson all have/had other shows lined up. Gage was supposed to go into a new series, but that fell through, Boyd's on OuaT and Jackson's on Arrow. Shifting around schedules for three other series is a lot more difficult than taking a mid-season filming break for one person for a few months.
