Hahaha!

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

it's really sad that katherine and a whole bunch of other details were altered for the big screen (i especially missed seeing nightlight when pitch started tossing out nightmares and thought the initial creation of jack with a huge moon staring at him might have alluded to more, moonbeams galore etc) but realistically it had to be accessible to little kids and mother goose just isn't a well known character. iirc from the interviews on youtube, along with bunny going through one heck of a transformation based off his voice actor's influence it happened for a lot of the characters. jack being turned into an 18 year old because of chris pine's deep voice is something i remember coming across, he gave off more of an appropriate adult air to be taking care of kids or something like that when leo bottomed out.

my advice to anyone pulling on the characters' history is to remember that people change over time and that over 300 years at least have happened since the details were written for the stories. (over 500 if you take into account how long pitch has been fading.)

what really marries the books and movies for me is what's written in the artbook. you'd think bunny was a wholly different character, but written in his bio about the warren is: This realm was once inhabited by a large population of rabbits, but today Bunny is the sole survivor. if it's in the movie artbook, then i'm more than willing to accept pitch destroying the pooka carries over into movie canon too. similarly, tooth's palace is quoted as being built for birds by birds, which i assume hints at the sisters of flight.

basically there are tons of hints that tie everything together, they're just terribly scattered and no one has gathered them together in one place yet. :(

I've seen the hints. They don't make up for the contradictions. I know DW had good reasons for what they did, I don't have problems with that. But those changes created a new universe in my eyes.

Changes in personality aren't a problem. Personally I have problems seeing book!Bunny becoming movie!Bunny, but that's something easily to handwave, and just a personal petpeeve that wouldn't get in my way of rp. Like you said, people change with time. Their powers being different can be hadnwaved as magic changing too. But the lack of Katherine, the wizard and Nightlight in the movie is a huge deal, because them not wanting to fight Pitch is OOC.

And there's the fucking protag of the movie, Jack. The movie shows his first involvement in anything guardian and Pitch related. If I'm seeing the timelines right, he was born as Jack Frost after the Guardians fought Pitch. But in the books he's already showing up - if that doesn't make you see the problem in continuity, I don't know what will.

it would have been a miracle if the movie made it without any contradictions, but i'm going to take it with a pinch of salt considering it had to be incredibly commercialized for a wide audience. perhaps katherine, the wizard and nightlight are scrapped, we just don't know because all we have are their origin stories, not a completely up to date history all the way to 2012. hopefully joyce will fix the discrepancies eventually.

jack is the only character out of the movie that i'd suggest anyone plays as his own person. we have the date he died/arose and rufftoon clings to him with her comics to provide vaguely canonically acceptable historical inserts where his past is concerned (she was last doing something with him and anansi, i think?). he's well-rounded enough not to need extra book canon. stuffing him with it would only fuck up his motivations in the movie, i agree on that.

at the end of the day joyce has no major problem in letting books and the movie blur, so as long as a player doesn't completely forget one or the other exists they should be able to play a good representation of whoever they choose. no one is really right or wrong in this fandom, that i've personally seen or heard.

Again, it's not about the personalities, which can be explained, it's about continuity. Not only Jack's motivations get screwed: how do you write a history section about the other guardians using both canons? "They met Jack for the first time in book 4- and then again in the movie, also for the first time."

the same way anyone with two canon timelines would, by having the character treat jack as a different version of 'jack frost', the name he was told to assume as a spirit. that lore was already there. the book version might die, spirits could possibly get the mythology passed on. there are dozens of different possibilities until joyce fixes the gaps in his own continuity.

it's all guesswork at this point, there's no reason to get bent out of shape until we have all the facts. until then, have whichever character you play regard movie!jack as an alternate to the one they might come to know in the book. it shouldn't affect cr too greatly if their emotions (trust/hate) carry over to him.

the same way anyone with two canon timelines would

two different timelines make for two different universes, make up your mind already

two different sections of the same timeline. better?

Or, more likely, the movie is only based on the book series and they're AUs of each other

That doesn't mean you can't draw on the other as a source of inspiration, just that they're set in two different universes.

but they didn't meet him for the first time in the movie

yes they did, that's why north made introductions

tooth even says she's heard a lot about him, she hasn't seen his teeth before

(Anonymous) 2013-07-19 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
...Yes they did. Well. Everyone except Bunnymund and Jack. The rest? They'd just HEARD of each other.

DA popping in here to say that Jack is appearing in Sandman and the War of Dreams, so he is going to be book canon. He was also pictured in the picturebook about Manny as a constellation with the other Guardians.

As for what happened to Katherine, I headcanon she and Nightlight were off elsewhere during the course of the movie (maybe on the moon, which would explain why they didn't answer the call).
