making a game based on this podcast

(Anonymous) 2013-07-14 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
i have had this thought too, anon.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-14 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
god yes please

although it would be ever cooler if it weren't jamjar oriented

(Anonymous) 2013-07-14 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
it would be really neat if it was sort of like 'a story about you' (idr what the episode is actually called but you know what i mean) and no matter how characters came into the town, they can leave, but situations keep bringing them back, somehow.

or they get dragged in and out through dimensional rifts with velociraptors!

(Anonymous) 2013-07-14 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
you could choose to have your character stuck in a loop where they try to leave but can't, or do the thing where they can leave but keep winding up back there. or walk out of the whispering forest or the dog park (!!!!) or hell, someone's closet.

your character gets stuck for a day, hovering four feet off the ground in the men's bathroom.

modanon of the night vale game mentioned above here

every character comes through the door of the house that doesn't exist from the first episode. that's how they get to NV. they open a door and walk in and bam, they're walking out onto the sidewalk, baffling and vaguely terrifying Carlos, his perfect hair and his team of scientists

they can leave but there is always something to bring them back if they're gone for too long, like the mysterious unknown helicopters stealing them and the secret police saving them, they fall out of the odd plane that crashed into the gym, the Shape No One Ever Talks About Or Acknowledges becomes them and they pop back into the city etc

there are events based on all the major events in the podcasts
the first major event is going to be pretty cool tbh and I am incredibly excited for it

anon, i'm really excited about this game already! be sure to share it on rpanons once you're ready to open.

+1

i love this series and having a game about it would be so much fun and basically my ideal game

part of me is hoping when you do open it that it stays on the smaller side

I'm kind of hoping it stays smallish too, at least at first, because I'd really like to preserve the small-town feel of the NV podcasts and have lots of character involvement

maybe a character cap should be considered, y/n?

i wouldn't go for a character cap, because that usually discourages people from apping. it's a pretty niche fandom anyway, so letting people app as they will should be fine. you could consider stricter AC or something to make sure that the plot keeps moving and inactive characters get AC'ed out, though?

i agree with above anon, i think you should maybe play it out and see how it fares. i doubt it'll get big bc not many characters will fit the setting in the first place since it is a very niche fandom and series, but if it does you could maybe consider doing a character cap

i'm definitely going to app immediately when it opens! or, well, hopefully i will be able to. i refuse to miss this opportunity

sounds good to me, I'm not really a fan of character caps to begin with anyways

some suggestions!!

(Anonymous) 2013-07-15 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
- canon updates could work the same way! maybe even pose a canon update as a trip to desert bluffs...?
- make an ooc announcement that one wednesday no one can make a post because it will icly be canceled
- your major NPCs should be cecil, carlos, the mayor, and the sheriff's secret police. maaaaaaybe minor ones to bring out once in awhile if/when possibly requested are people like old woman josie, john peters, possibly the hooded figures, etc. save the government agency for big plots. focusing on playing too many NPCs would kind of make it lose it's charm.

thanks for the suggestions anon, let me tell you what I have planned:

- totally planning on cancelling a wednesday
- cecil, carlos and the secret police are already planned on for npcs, as well as frequent mentions of Old Woman Josie and perhaps the angels. no ideas yet on John Peters - you know, the farmer? - but for the most part Cecil is the biggest focus, as he'll be making the posts that change the day over and announcing what things to look out for that IC day (weather, traffic, that odd glowing light over city hall, people huddling over a hole in the parking lot behind the Ralphs etc).
- canon updates haven't been thought about yet! but that would be really super cool and maybe it could be more of a "you pick the adventure" in which the player can choose the incredibly odd happenstance that would change their character over (I can't stop thinking about maybe using the dog park or the Shape That No One Speaks About Or Acknowledges. they could complain about it IC and find no one notices them until they stop talking about it, perhaps)

other things:
- days are 2:1 ratio, but feel in-game as if they're 1:1; characters can mention that it feels as if the days are longer
- playing with the idea of the first day being daylight and the second day being nighttime, ala Exitvoid. thoughts? this could bring along more IC involvement as far as Weird Nighttime Happenstances go
- planning on playing with a majority of the things talked about that aren't necessarily big events in the podcasts; ghost traffic comes to mind, the lights above the arby's, perhaps a momentary minor "is anything really real" event, the fact that rabbits aren't to be trusted, etc
- was considering having Cecil open his radio air to anyone who happens to have information- shop openings, characters who need help finding an apartment, gossip, etc, since he's kind of a gossip monger -and putting those in the day changes as well.
- characters are encouraged and in fact preferred to start making themselves an (obviously odd) life in Night Vale, including opening shops in the city (and on the waterfront), actively involving themselves in town meetings, being mentioned on the radio, etc. player based events are also going to be open for business, where the players can suggest odd things and the mods can try to fit it to the setting. the goal is to keep the small town feel of Night Vale, where everyone knows everyone
- other NPCs could possibly be applied for (barring those under mod control) if anyone really, really wants to play someone (like John Peters, maybe? you know, the farmer?) and they could write their own events as well as be involved in the big mod events etc etc; still wondering after this one tho bc who wants to play people like John Peters or the traitorous Tully

these are the ideas already considered

I have nothing concrete to say, except that 1 day being daylight and the 2nd being nighttime actually sounds like an awesome way to go for this game, i just have to say that this sounds absolutely fantastic, modnon, and I love the thought you're putting into making it feel like the show.

better question: who doesn't want to be john peters? you know, the farmer?

on the 2:1 day ratio, i personally don't like having ooc days vs. ic days not match, but in this case it might work.

I don't either tbh but the idea was that it'd be like a day of sunlight and a day of night, and the townspeople are all confused when characters are like BUT IT'S NOT THE SAME DAY IT'S JUST A DAY OF NIGHT
