Yer wonderful

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

We talk a lot about what mechanics we want or don't want in games - powers, me loss, au, app and ac cycles, plots, things like that - but what are anons' thoughts on settings? What settings and setting elements do you find most fun and original? Besides abandoned cities, is there anything that's done to death? What about things you want to see more of?

sci-fi of all sorts

fantasy that isn't quasi-medieval bullshit or japanese dnd

original settings (or maybe canon with the serial numbers filled off)

settings with factions but space for players to add stuff

These are for "would like to see more of", right?

Also, what would you consider examples of the second category? I'm struggling to think of things that are fantasy and aren't jrpg-ish, quasi-medieval, or sci-fi sans chrome.

yes to your previous question

as for examples, idk... there was someone making an oc game a while ago that sounded cool, a spirits vs mortal children of spirits. i would be fine with sci-fi sans chrome. the tabletop game exalted is sort of jrpgish but can be tilted in other ways, like wuxia or surreal supernatural weirdness.

just something other than "people strap on swords and armor to deal with dragons ravaging the peasants"

and related to below anon's suggestion, i'd like more "what the average npc knows/will say/lives" pages

I like settings with a lot of detailed worldbuilding - I want to know the history of the world and what kinds of social issues are important to the people there. It's nice when the world feels realistic and "lived in." I don't need to know the details of the world's technology or economy or food supply, but it's kind of cool when that information is there.

Things I'm tired of: schools, isolated cities/towns, asylums, prisons, spaceships, and anything else that's a "closed" setting with no greater world around it. I also dislike settings where characters are magically provided with conveniences like food, clothing and money without any kind of logical explanation. It feels too artificial. I like having to put effort into reading game info and thinking of how my character is going to fit into the setting.

Things I'd like to see more of: cyberpunk with realistic technology and corporate intrigue (a la Snow Crash), Asian settings (especially something with a wuxia fantasy theme, or something set in the 1920s/30s), steampunk/dieselpunk that's not set in generic Victorian London, urban fantasy with a really clear concept that's not set in a magical generic American city, non-medieval fantasy (I've been fooling around with a sort of vaguely historical fantasy setting involving a magical library), scifi with political themes...
