I keep toying with the idea of making a Dragonriders of Pern-based AU game. Characters would either be AU-ed into the setting or be OCs.

My major problems (Feel free to mention solutions and/or other potential problems)

No network possibilites - Not a HUGE problem, but personally I wouldn't want it to be limited to just prose style - I like writing prose, but part of why I play on DW instead of forums is I enjoy action spam.
A lot of background info- Then again, there's not a huge amount that people would HAVE to know to get started, and there are some good basic wikis I could link to.
People being stupid about dragon colors - To be fair, this is always a problem in Pern RP, but with the way people whine I worry it'd be worse.

Slightly off topic, perhaps, but what does forum rpg mean and why is only prose allowed there?

Forum RP is rp based on forums, usually a free provider like Invisionfree of JCink.

Put "action spam" allowed somewhere in the rules. That solves your first issue.

Unfortunately, I don't think anything will solve Pern being a huge, unwieldy canon full of difficult elements that turn players batshit. You could ask people to rank their dragon preferences and try not to give anyone their last pick, but you would still get whining from people who ranked a shiny first and got their second choice instead.

Honestly what would make the leeriest about playing in a Pern game would be the rampant sexism, homophobia and rape that go on in canon pern. If you had any variation on 'dragons choose people by gender/sexuality' and/or 'flight lust is a thing and you MUST have sex with the person whose dragon flies yours' I'm outtie. Get rid of that and for fuck's sake don't shove a communicator into a setting where it doesn't belong, and I'm golden.

from what i read on BRPS it's a pretty common thing for Pern games to change or eliminate a lot of that stuff. dragons choose by personality rather than sex/gender, they'll only rise for mating flights once their riders are sexually mature, and the flights might make you really randy but you can have sex with whoever you choose that's willing. it wouldn't be hard to make a Pern game that didn't make people's skin crawl.

I've been in that scene, and can answer stuff if anyone's curious? Pern fandom tends to just steal colorful dragons and the planet and then go hogwild in all directions cleaning it up and adding things to improve it. (...Well, based on your taste.)

1. Make a note in the rules that the game allows for both prose and action spam and leave it to player preference.

2. As other anons said, completely eliminate all the shitty rapey and homophobic elements. No forced sex with someone just because their dragons mated, anyone can impress on anything regardless of gender or orientation. Honestly make the human sex drive influence completely optional. Switch to calling it an inspired by Pern game versus a Pern game if you have to so purists can't bitch.

3. If you really want to completely stave off dragon color butthurt, restrict gold, bronze, and possibly brown to NPCs. If characters can only impress blue or green that eliminates the hierarchical/speshul snowflake whining.
