CHARACTERS WITH ACCENTS

(Anonymous) 2013-07-11 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Specifically characters from literature with Funetik Aksents that are inconsistent and/or hard to understand. Would dropping most of the phonetic spelling and focusing on word usage/order be considered out of character? If so, any tips on how not to go overboard with the accent?

ngl, I had to look up what funetik aksent meant. But yeah, focus more on word usage and syntax. A lot of phonetically written accents can get annoying to read since a lot of people may have to struggle through the post to figure out what it is your character is trying to say. Maybe denote in OOC notes that your character has a thick accent. If there's a specific part that you think NEEDS to be hard to understand for your post to work, do what you gotta do.

Even if it's something as simple as a lisp, don't write out the accent. If you specify in the ooc note 'Alice has a heavy Eastern European accent' then hopefully people will have enough sense to pick up on it.

The only time I'd say write out an accent is if it does something you wouldn't expect an accent of that type to do-like Chekov's 'nuclear wessels' for example, since proper Russian doesn't have a 'w' sound to begin with.

For me, what it boils down to is how true to the character you're staying with the accent. Writing Hagrid, Rogue, Gambit, or a Redwall mole without writing their accents out just seems off-putting to me. After reading so much literature with those words there on the page, there's just a little something lost.
