they're named that way because kh/kh2/kh3 are the only console games. it's not kh-unique, it's also what the metal gear series does and so on

the reason chain of memories isn't the true sequel is because it focuses on a different gameplay entirely and doesn't move the series as forward as the console ones have done so far. it was always meant to have an "intermission" feel, if you want to call it that

It's definitely true that the handheld games had important plot stuff going on, though (especially BBS and 3D) and it's going to be fun to watch the "only numbered games matter!" crowd be completely baffled by KH3.

i'm not denying that, just explaining why the games are titled how they are hahaha

i would think they figured out the handheld games are important because of chain of memories' context in kh2, but that'll be on them

Not moving it forward a whole lot? But it introduces Nobodies, Namine, Organization XIII, is a MAJOR step forward for Riku, introduces DiZ/Ansem the Wise...

Yeeeaaaah. Not seeing how that doesn't accomplish a whole lot. Not as much linear plot advancement =/= not a lot that was important. It moved the series ahead plenty. I remember lots of people being confused when they skipped CoM and went straight to 2.

if you know of game of thrones, it's a lot like the season finales: the 9th/second to last episode is the final show-killer, while the last episode just sets up for the next season. a lot of information, but also a lot left to explore and expand on

you could consider 3d an exception i guess but since the console games are the Sora Story, then you need room for riku spotlight somewhere

Kingdom Hearts has always been written almost like a chapter book. If you think the non-console games don't explore a lot, then I think you're a goddamn idiot. Exploring a concept means nothing without introducing it, and a lot of people were completely lost when they skipped CoM.

then i guess they were too clueless because my friends at the time could put everything together eventually without playing except for the occasional question of "who's the blonde girl" and "did sora kill the missing members early on, since they're not in this game". kh2 reviewed it all pretty thoroughly if i remember, or left real strong hints. playing com helps, but it's not IMPOSSIBLE to skip it, go to kh2, and figure it out yourself

i'm not saying that people shouldn't play the games because they're pointless, which is why i think you're getting defensive. i've played them all in the order they came out, and each one has important info. but if we're taking kh/com/kh2 into consideration?? i don't think a HUGE BLOWN DIFFERENCE was made, no

Since those same people are continued to whine about how squeenix is doing that instead of KH3 and how they aren't going to buy it because it's just rehashing the old story and isn't relevant to the plot.

(though I agree square is definitely thinking ahead, distributing games on different consoles to get people who didn't have a playstation interested in trying the series who might not have tried it otherwise then re-release all the story relevant games on a single console so people can get all the story before playing KH3.)
