So I'm working on a game, and here's the basic idea:

The videogames we play aren't just games. They're real - in a manner of speaking. Within each cartridge, disc, or digital file is an entire virtual world full of amazing characters and stories. More important, though, is the fact that those worlds are in danger.

It began with one character who stumbled on a glitch and became infected with an unknown virus. The virus began to spread, infecting game after game, and those digital worlds were destroyed. As the worlds began to collapse, characters worked to escape, eventually breaking through to the real world. For some reason, all barriers led to a small, mostly abandoned neighborhood on the outskirts of New York City. As characters crossed the barrier into this new world, they were transformed into normal humans, indistinguishable from any other person walking the street.

The phenomenon didn't go unnoticed by the United States government, and a task force was created. The expats were given new identities and housing to help protect their origins, and monitored closely for signs of the virus. The abandoned neighborhood was refreshed, turned into housing and stores to provide a home for the characters.

so the game would only allow videogame characters, and a PB would be necessary because the characters are given "real bodies" when coming into the real world. I think it has potential because it's not a "character wakes up in a strange new place against their will" type of game but it's not AU either.

What if I played a human who looks normal?

Let's take Nilin from Remember Me since i was playing five minutes ago. Looks perfectly human. Would she need a PB?

I'm going to discuss this with the other mod and see where we want to go, it seems nobody likes the idea of a PB game.

What do you think of the game otherwise?

is there more of a hook/plot, eg. can the characters do anything about their worlds being in danger? or is this going to be video game holly heights?

That's the biggest problem we're having right now. I don't know anything about Holly Heights, but i'm not a huge fan of slice of life games. I do want to figure out a way to have an over-arching plot but I want all the details worked out in advance.

there is also the possibility that the virus could cause "events" but I don't want the game to rely on that solely, either. "And this week's wacky event is... everyone talks in poetry!" doesn't appeal to me that much, I'd prefer something more serious.

Slice of life tends to happen despite all efforts to the contrary. Giving them housing and human forms will only encourage it. What about forcing them to hide from authorities instead of the government going "Oh look there are a bunch of fictional characters here! Let's treat them like ordinary citizens instead of intellectual property!"

Events should be opportunities to build CR and develop characters. Silly "oh no it's raining chocolate" events wear thin for me quickly. They just lead to a bunch of identical posts about the event that either get dozens of comments from existing CR or a few pity comments that never lead to anything long-term.

as a foreignon who's a bit tired of games set in america, a setting in a different country could be interesting, so even the modern day earth-based characters (let's face it, they're usually american) would have some culture shock ("what do you mean the stores all close at five? is THAT the price of gas? winter in july ARE WE IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE?!") and if the locals have any npc presence they could be like "damn, that sure is a lot of new immigrants!" while the vidyas are all "...yes. immigrants from another country. that's exactly what we are."

... sorry, i think this idea has been building in me for a while and you're just the first game i'm taking it out on.

I agree with you, but unfortunately, both us mods are American. :( I wouldn't know how to accurately run a game set elsewhere.

How strict would the "videogame characters only" guidelines be? Because there are a hell of a lot of canons that have video games based on them.

I'm not even talking all the anime-based games here. LotR, MCU, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Batman, etc. Even NCIS has a video game.

My intention is that it would only be characters who are first and foremost considered "video game characters".
