ITT: boring characters in RP

(Anonymous) 2013-06-07 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Especially characters you've played against with multiple muns, but they're always dull as shit no matter who's playing them.

Some characters just seem to suck the life out of even the best players.

Most protagonists, especially the Persona 3 and 4 protags.

Touhous, but at least they tend to stick with their own little circle jerk so they're pretty much contained.

haven't had this problem with souji/yu/whatever, but minatos are so boring. i can barely keep up threads with them. and maybe it's a cute character quirk in the game or something, but don't have him fall asleep during our thread plz. multiple times this has happened, WHY.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-07 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
As a P3 protag player, that uh...seems excessive (Also not a real quirk, you can do that to improve your condition since it's a P3 game mechanic). He's sleepy and looks like that, but he's not a narcoleptic. :|

I'd say that overall it is harder to get a feel for the P3 protagonists and Yu/Souji also has a more defined voice since there's the game, the anime series and P4 Arena. Hopefully the movie will change that up a bit!

idk why so many people play him that way then. the post either starts with them asleep or they end up asleep somewhere in the thread. glad to hear you don't.

and i've never had a problem with a minako, she's always been fun and engaging. it's just minato that seems to get the short end a lot of the time.

Ayrt

That's weird, since I've seen a lot of Minato players that don't do that. But thanks, I may not entirely know how to be engaging but I at least know better than to play up traits that are obviously jokes.

Minako is more dynamic than Minato and the problem's made worse by how short the answers are, so it's easy to make Minato one-note if one sticks only to the dialogue. Thing is, the guy's obviously capable of talking a lot at times and I interpret his dialogue choices as a sign that he does have a lot of internal monologue, so people who make Minato seem too boring likely do not show that what he eventually says may differ a lot from all the thoughts he's having.

buffy summers. ending a bunch of nouns in -y does not an interesting character make.

Touhou.

I have nothing against them but, they ones i've played against have been dull as dishwater.

Very little to get excited about.

Squall. I pretty much feel that way about him in canon, too.

(pretty much any quiet badass who dots constantly is the same way)

We all know Laguna was the best thing about FF8.

all I remember is there's some part where you're fighting a bunch of waves of soldiers on a cliff or something and he was yelling I GOTTA SCRATCH THE BOTTOMS OF MY FEEEEEEET

I think. it's possible I hallucinated that, along with most of FF8.

really? the squalls i've played against tend to have his tl;dr thoughts in brackets and those are usually pretty funny. they also work with body language too.

oh yeah? huh. i've played with some very bland ones, but i wouldn't mind the scanty dialogue if i got good internal monologue to go with it.

castiel

I've never seen the show but apparently he's a monosyllabic cro-magnon with a staring problem

this is basically canon depending on which writer is in charge of the episode

:C if you're playing with a crappy Cas, yeah. He's a pretty complex character if the player puts some effort in, though.

Most stoic/angsty/quiet aloof loner-type characters. There are ways to make this type of character engaging and interesting, but I've played against so few people who put in the effort- most of them give boring, impossible to reply to tags. At least some of the time, it seems to be because the players are so hellbent on being 100% IC (or playing up the aloof badass loner side) they aren't willing to bend characterization a little or use the setting/events creatively to push meaningful interactions so the character ends up dull as ditchwater as a result.
