Eden of the East Game

I know a game like this would probably be impossible to pull off, but I was watching this series called "Eden of the East" and I thought it had such an interesting premise that could result in some awesome RP.

Basically you find out that Japan has recruited 12 people to "save the country" and they are given 10 billion... I think it's dollars not yen to do that. And as long as you don't use all the money selfishly you're allowed to continue. And then if you run out of money, you're killed. If someone else wins, you're killed. And to top it off, one of the contenders is called the controller, they are the one who carries out the executions.

And it was just cool to see how different characters handled it, one became a serial killer, another built a huge socialist hospital, another launched missiles. while another STOPPED the missiles. they could all track each others actions on a network of specialized cell phones and such.

I think a game based on this, with different 'teams' working against each other would be so much fun. Not necessarily individually like in the show, but with huge groups of people all on the same team.

Maybe even something like each character has to save their own world. I DONT KNOW.

But the sheer upkeep that would have to be maintained by a mod team, and trying to keep players in line (due to the fact that back stabbing is sort of encouraged), it would be exhausting.

But idk. I still think it'd be fun.

I think it would be amazing as a small game if the players were really into plotting, but yeah, running it with a lot of people would be really difficult for a mod if they had to play Juiz... But I'd love to see characters have to use their own skills and values to "save" a world with realistic problems, rather than just be thrown into the usual unrealistic jamjar.

iawtc. i think it'd work best with a small set of players who are already familiar with each other (especially because of the backstabby nature of the game), but it could work with players who aren't as long as they communicates clearly with each other.

It died quickly, sadly. I think a big hurdle is how complicated the concept is. Human behavior is predictable in some areas, but it's not necessarily intuitive. For example, Normalcy Bias: the volcano just outside of town is about to blow and Grandma is calmly going through the family photos while the rest of the household is trying to get her to evacuate with them, because Grandma's mind can't accept the scale of the impending disaster despite the increasingly glaring evidence. For an example from Eden of the East, who would have guessed that having the Prime Minister say "uncle" at that moment would have had the effect it did? The mods would have to simulate the responses of several highly complex systems, and the responses will inevitably make the players go to wankgate with "the mods are idiots!!1 no one would stay in their home when a volcano is about to blow!!!1!". Additionally, the mods would need to provide a lot of details about the world and it's politics, not just rely on Like Reality Unless Noted and hope that the players don't ignore strong evidence that their view of the political world is right and do things that can't possibly work (and we're back to "illogical human behavior" now).

Bottom line is, if an Eden of the East game can be made that's good I'd join it in a heartbeat, but I don't think it's realistic.

Ah, I remember that game. It died before I got around to joining. I think one of its problems was that most jamjar characters really have little incentive to care about "improving" a generic country that isn't part of their world, even if you give them 100 million dollars and an artificial intelligence. It would be neat as an AU, though.
