Time Link has very skewed perceptions of what is 'right' and what is 'wrong' due to his upbringing and this is shown very clearly in the games. Minor examples: He thought it was strange doors were locked in Castle Town and he goes around randomly breaking people's property and stealing their money. He's also never encountered a lot of the things that most societies understand as good or bad. Before Amat he had never heard of or had an understanding of rape. Sex yes, but not rape. He did not know what he was being asked to do was wrong, because he is used to being asked to do things he doesn't like (for example, killing things or being sent back in time to before he opened the door of time) for the good of the world.
He has since learned of rape, experienced it, and it one of the major things he's had trouble justifying to himself. It's one of the biggest things making him draw away from Atia as he comes to terms with the fact that his assumptions about her - based on her being in charge and the one that brought him there - were wrong. It distresses him every time it's thrown in his face because he is now aware of what a violation it is and that it is not something anyone should be expected to go through. He can't justify it and this clashes with his personal expectations of doing what others ask of him - regardless of his own feelings - for the greater good.
Time Link has always been influenced by those around him who are in charge and/or in a parental role. When it comes to good and bad outside the Kokiri Forest, he has relied on the knowledge of first the Great Deku Tree, then Navi, and then Zelda, and then the Sages when he grew up, to tell him what is good or evil. He was told by the Deku Tree that he had to help Princess Zelda, so he had to help Princess Zelda. He was told by Princess Zelda that Ganondorf was evil, therefore Ganondorf was evil. Heck, Rauru had never been mentioned to him, but he accepted the words of the Sage as the gospel truth right out the gate. Same with Sheik (once Sheik started talking). Because they were in a position of looking and sounding like they knew what was going on and could guide him on his set goal of saving Hyrule from Ganondorf.
Everyone else he encounters, if he isn't told they are evil or bad, he treats as good - but just misguided if they do something bad (unless they are obviously monstrous enemies). Even the Skull Kid, who, by all appearances in their first encounter, should have been classified as 'evil', was easily given the benefit of the doubt. Tatl, too. She had bullied him into not being able to catch up with the Skull Kid, and yet as soon as she told Link to help her and hurry up about it, he just shrugged and shook his head. It was par for the course. He is never ready to automatically call out someone as evil - without being told they are by someone he's put trust in - because he gives the benefit of the doubt so readily.
Using this as a starting point, and Atia being the one to bring him there (which everyone kept telling him), he assumed he'd been brought to help her with some great problem, and that he would eventually be given a guide, and then taken to wherever the temples he needed to clean out were. That never happened and more and more issues with what he was seeing and experiencing built up.
Eventually he went to Atia's temple and asked her directly what his quest was, hoping to find answers. She told him the line about 'learning a lesson' and he clung to that because then it would mean she wasn't bad like everyone thought and she just didn't have a choice in how things were done because she's a sex goddess, specifically. He's worn the Fierce Deity's mask and the mask's personality overwhelmed his own (in the Manga, which is the only real descriptor of how it affects Link personally we have). So he has some experience with how Gods think and view things (in his own universe). Like many, he assumes all Gods operate the way he is familiar with.
The Fierce Deity could take Majora down with ease, just cut right through Majora. The Fierce Deity was also implied by the in-game text to hold a power 'darker' than Majora's. I.E. a potentially more Evil power. This is Link's only personal experience seeing things as a God would.
I don't believe it's a stretch for him to base his views of how they think, and that they don't understand that what is bad for mortals should be bad, period, off this experience with the Fierce Deity's Mask. It was a skewed view to begin with and it's only been promoted by Atia playing on Link's trusting nature. He's a very trusting person and in the case of Atia (and Izaya, CR-wise), it's going to end up with him learning some very harsh lessons and growing considerably.
To note though, he's never been against people trying to break her control or find a way home, or even outright challenge Atia (not on the principle of opposing her, at least - he is against people needlessly throwing themselves against something that will bring harm to them or others). He has always been in support of those who take those steps because he does believe that people other than himself should have a choice in where they go. Link views himself as a tool of fate with little choice in the matter, but he doesn't believe others should have to carry those same burdens. He does, however, believe any attempts to leave or break free of the collars should come without harming the Native population because they are innocent in his eyes. He's very much for non-violent methods of opposing Atia because of the risk of harm - to anyone - that comes from violently opposing her. He recognizes she is dangerous.
Atia, and others, it should be made clear, have been ICly manipulating his naivete to help keep him in support of Atia - sometimes on purpose, sometimes accidentally. Izaya's been playing him since Day One (just in general). Tusbaki was eager to toy with him. OoT!Zelda expressed concerns about his views, but accepted them as his and did not strongly oppose his point of view because of how happy he seemed to be. Navi did, but she wasn't on the island for long and Zelda arrived at the same time, so Link focused more on Zelda than he did Navi. And Link, at the time, couldn't find it in his heart to be mad at Atia for reuniting him with the two most important women in his life. There are more characters, but many of them have left over time.
And his coping method is starting to unravel with the lack of positive reinforcement and encouragement the last few months. It is a slow change because of how he attempts to bottle negative emotions up and put his focus on other things to keep up a happy face. But it's been about two months since Zelda left and what he's been through with friends that remain have already begun to make him regret a lot of what he's said on Atia's behalf in the last year since he started to openly speak in her favor. He has begun to feel guilt about helping Sky find peace in worship of her during and following SS!Zelda's stay this past November-December.
I do have plans to have him come out and say that he was wrong about Atia and apologize in a couple months after some other threads with close CR are done that will help push him to finally giving up on her being the good person he wants her to be. His CR with Maraich and Vergil have been important to that so far, and it's going to shatter a lot of his faith in the inherent goodness of others when it happens. I don't want to go into that too fast because of the IC emotional fallout and there's been a lot of IC drama lately that I need a break from playing out. He won't be supporting her much longer, but he did start the game with the assumption that she was a good person and that her methods were constrained by her limitations as a god.
If you believe that this development from start to finish is OOC, then please crit me on one of the HMDs whenever you see something that you believe needs to change and help me play him better and I will work to make him as IC as possible. I will not ignore the development he currently has because that wouldn't be fair to any of his CR, but I will do what I can to push his development in the right direction if it’s askew. The HMD on his journal is Anon enabled and screened if you don't want to do it logged in on the game one.
No horse in this race. Passing vet here.
(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)You mean Ocarina of Time Link? His characterization has been more or less raised lovingly by the Kokiri Village. They farm, they carve their houses out of trees. They play some pranks and respect the forest which protects them from visitors. Now, your counterargument uses meta and does so on an unbalanced scale. A Link that waltzes into houses and breaks pots with no one caring can be interpreted in a host of ways, yes. But reasonably, there are a few quick and simple answers:
- The Kokiri/Hylian people are just that oblivious to their belongings
- The Kokiri/Hylian people welcome others to take a choice selection of their belongings
- Link is boldly confiscating their belongings, justifying himself that there is a bigger worry at hand.
- Link and everyone else has some internal insight that the player does not about the pots. Pots that return to their shape the minute the room is left. Pots that randomly generate money or weapons.
Three of these justify Link's meta actions and wash his hands clean of any moral ambiguity. The fourth throws some question on Link's moral character, but not enough to regard him as anything more than "a troublemaker". Now, here's why I say you're unbalancing the meta characterization vs what he's likely faced in Atia.
Now, current players feel free to jump in it's been a while. But Atia is a dark entity. Her actions aren't as small as bold theft, or breaking and entering (two meta actions familiar to Link). Her actions have in the past and likely in current include:
- Public execution for dissenting against her word and ways.
- Ignoring the demise and safety of her own people.
- Creating entire areas on her isle for the purposes of torture.
- Rape. The unwanted sexual assault on one person by the other. At the very lightest, extremely dubious consensual sex.
- Torturing people IN death via bargains with the other gods
- Deliberately tampering with the minds of others
- Drugging minds and bodies.
That's a short list. Most of these traits actually cross with a figure Link should know very well: Ganon. Who manipulates and bewitches people until they are out of their minds and stand in Link's way. Who manipulate the dead that give Link various amounts of hell throughout his quest. Who delights in torturing others, if not physically, then by cursing them and therefore enlisting them into his forces. Implied public execution of everyone in the main castle of Hyrule, not to mention the example he made of Lon Lon Ranch. And he certainly does not care for the safety of the land under his rule, as the people live in fear of his rampaging forces daily (the Kokiri Forest in particular).
Now, this is without mentioning rape. And most of the examples that I've stated can be found either on the network (which iirc is searchable) or by any bystander PC willing to share their story with Link. Link's meta characterization of personal property does not begin to compare to Atia's very real, very terrible, very terminal list of actions. In the balance, she is the bigger, more evident "evil". Some allowance can be given of characters on the receiving end of these wrongs shrugging the matters off in the vein of "oh, must be a day that ends in y", but the implications of what's been hoisted on to their minds and bodies cannot be ignored by someone as keen as Link has proven to be in canon.
"... and then the Sages when he grew up, to tell him what is good or evil."
This is erroneous. It bases Link's entire morality on a handful of proposed "people in authority". It ignores the meta characterization which better defines Link's moral character and upright status as a hero. Link isn't a person that needs to be lead. He is, acknowledging meta, a clever and insightful individual. He calmly and swiftly figures out and unravels dungeon traps. He is a listener that is willing to hear anyone's story who is under duress, even the rambling of an enemy. He is willing to help and take on problems of others, half the time without even being asked. He has a keen ability even without Navi at his shoulder, of assessing real and potential dangers.
Such a Link should not be able to ignore the dichotomy of the natives that worship Atia, and the second-class slaves under the heel of Atia. It is a nature that is literally as obvious at the sun baring down on any luster contained in the collars.
This is probably the foundation of the argument against your characterization. While you seem to be painting a picture of Link eventually coming to realize these atrocities committed around him, other people are wondering why the clever, insightful, bold, and empathetic Hero of Time hasn't realized these atrocities (to say the least of rape) a lot sooner than he has. And I have to agree with them. The "honeymoon" of thinking Atia in the right should not have reasonably exceeded a month, based just on the PC interactions around Link alone.
And a canon nitpick: Link did not need to be told Ganon was evil. He'd been having prophetic dreams of the man for a while, which is the exact setting upon which the game begins. Further, the death of one of Link's guiding lights, The Great Deku Tree, is attributed directly to Ganon. He knew that man was evil, or at least had justification to be considerably wary of Ganon's ambition, before he could even set foot out of the Kokiri Forest to make his way to Castle Town.
Everyone else he encounters, if he isn't told they are evil or bad, he treats as good
Your argument here would be stronger if you said instead he gives all people "the benefit of a doubt". That aligns with his character better than the insistence of him believing in the good of all people. As established, he already had evidence of how disastrous Ganon's ambition was. He also gives instances, meta and otherwise, of not judging a book by the cover. Mido, despite antagonizing Link in the Kokiri village, is not hated or considered evil by Link. Bossy and snippy Ruto is regarded obviously kindly by Link. Link doesn't hate Ingo, who snatches the Lon Lon Ranch out of Talon and Maron's hands. He plays by the man's inane rules until a point that Ingo's unwillingness to cooperate is clear, at which point Link takes Epona and peaces out of Lon Lon Ranch. Basically, no one is an enemy to Link until they make themselves as one. He is a tolerant man to a level that most people would blanch at. Hell, he never hates Skull Kid in Majora's Mask in spite of the many afflictions hoisted on him by that guy. A few words from SK's two friends and Link decided to save him from himself, right alongside saving Termina. And this is, again, a morality display that goes far beyond Link being told of what is right and what is wrong. He has his own judgment, and his own morality he answers to.
Link views himself as a tool of fate with little choice in the matter, but he doesn't believe others should have to carry those same burdens.
This is an interpretation choice. There's no evidence in game that would support this claim. We're given instances where others tell Link "this is his destiny", but Link's own in-game actions repeatedly point to "His believing in committing actions to solve a problem". Particularly since the moment "destiny" is done with him, he goes off looking for Navi, which is not notably in any god/goddess's blueprint.
Atia, and others, it should be made clear, have been ICly manipulating his naivete to help keep him in support of Atia - sometimes on purpose, sometimes accidentally. Izaya's been playing him since Day One (just in general).
Speaking one person to the next that enjoys watching the overall disillusion of a character, there's nothing wrong with wanting to put your muse through these paces. Tasty results can indeed be tasty. Though again, I'd have to point out two concerns in such a development must be pacing, and the character not losing themselves to the would-be manipulating factors. You've stated the factors for manipulation. Can I ask that you also state the opposing factors with equally strong influences and stories? I'm on the outside, so I don't want to judge your Link as "just CRing with manipulators".
Following on the rest, I don't have access to Amat's HMD. It's only that you posted this here that I decided to respond: as a close fan of that particular canon of the Legend of Zelda, as a former Amat player, and as someone who is, as mentioned, a very big fan of taking innocent and naïve characters and putting them through a careful regiment of harsh pain in order to see if their character can indeed stand up. A lot of what I commented on is just an exercise to perhaps get you to consider your character from a different angle, and take away anything you may regard as helpful or useful.
I know from reading this thread that what I've opted to comment on is in the past and cannot be changed or adjusted. That's just how RP rolls. But I believe that if you choose to use it, you can use it to gauge how you'll proceed in the game in the future. What I can advise you to watch is your timing and keeping an eye on the core of your character. And to keep in mind that Link is a person of action, prone to take the hard option of toiling through obstacles to get into the heart of a matter and resolve it, no matter if that is facing down a beast protecting evil black magic, or going out of his way to fetch some valuable near and dear to some ailing person. Yes, he can rain on people's parades (literally, considering that ocarina), and his view on personal property is indeed questionable. But with that in mind, he's a very personally strong and personally responsible individual that, at core, likes to help others, and takes decisive action toward resolving problems.
If any of this proves useful, then I'll be glad. Good luck.
+1
(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)As a person who DOES play in Amat and is an avid fan of the OoT game, and of Link in general, I definitely agree with these points. If Link was going to be fooled I could only have seen it happen for a few weeks, maybe a month tops. "Coping" is all well and good but the core of Link's character is his STRENGTH and COURAGE. He would not hide, he would face trouble whenever it is. He's steadfast, tolerant and true and does NOT stand for injustices/people suffering just as his own personal coping mechanism.
I understand you want Link to have layers, but to me this wasn't the way to go about it- if you wanted to play weak-minded you shouldn't have picked up someone like Link. His morality when it comes to suffering is never in question in the game- ever.
Re: No horse in this race. Passing vet here.
That, aside...
Thank you for taking the time to write all this out! There are several points I'm going to continue to disagree with you on as they are very much a matter of interpretation of the presented canon. However, you are correct that Link is a very decisive person who, once he makes up his mind to do something, will do everything in his power to get it done. Link has been sidetracked a lot in his goals on Amat and I may have been playing that up too much and in doing so, prolonged his spiral of disillusionment quite a bit longer than necessary.
Before I get to anything else, since you aren't in the game anymore, I think it should be noted that Link arrived after the island upheaval and Atia's 'change' (which I believe was when she first became a blond?). She began trying to present a kind, almost motherly image of a Goddess who was only bringing people here for their own good. Link never saw examples of her publicly executing anyone who challenged her verbally (he has seen her choke people publicly after they attempted to bomb her temple and it looked like both defense of the priests inside, and self-defense) or her ignoring the demise and safety of her own people.
She's been pretty actively playing up the whole caring for her people thing and using excuses of the Collared being the ones attempting to harm them (or actively harming them, physically or otherwise) as reasons for her being more strict or taking things away. This has not been helped by the Collared who actually have been taking out their frustration - or just generally being assholes for the hell of it - on the natives. For example, last February there was a Powers event and half the city got destroyed by Collared - Link died for the first time on the island fighting Lucifer (from supernatural) and the devil killed a swath of natives when he couldn't get to Atia directy. Atia claimed she gave people their powers back because so many had asked for it and she was trying to make their stay more enjoyable, but took them away because so many of her people had been killed needlessly by those with powers. It seemed a sensible argument and she acted as if she were genuinely regretful and saddened by the death and destruction.
And then there are the people who are dead in their canons. They're given another chance to keep living, even with a string attached, and I don't see Link believing that giving them such a gift is wrong or evil.
He's also never seen her "Creating entire areas on her isle for the purposes of torture." - Unless you are referring to the Forest of Mirrors? If so, that was never presented to Link as something she did to actively harm people and from all descriptions he had been given, it sounded like a more illusion heavy extension of the Lost Woods. Eris has since laid claim to the forest as her domain (as of this past January) and taken credit for being behind the madness.
In short, Link has seen the natives be treated poorly by the collared as much as the collared have been treated poorly by Atia, and Atia has been playing the line of just defending her own while doing what she has to do to 'help' those with collars. So he's had a lot of mental conflict over all of that as it's hard to see who is 'right' and who is 'wrong' when both sides have a lot of both going on - and he tries to always give the benefit of the doubt.
On to the other examples you asked me for!
Link has a lot of close CR both actively manipulating and passively encouraging his giving Atia the benefit of the doubt. The strongest, most vocal, and consistent opponent of Atia in Link's life on the island is Maraich - his first long time collar partner, turned boyfriend, turned ex-boyfriend following a bad break up this past November turned... well, Link's trying to stay friends with him and Mariach is trying to get Link to get back together with him. The relationship was not a healthy one for either of them and left both feeling like the other never listened. There was a lot of arguing and by the end of it, it was bad all around.
At the start of the relationship, however, Link was feeling pretty open to Atia being a decent person because he had just gotten to see Navi again for a month or so, Zelda had arrived a few months before, he thought he was in love with Maraich and Maraich loved him back, he had finished building a house for Zelda so she didn't have to work to pay rent if she didn't want to, and he had a home and... well, there was also lot of thankfulness about just being in a grown up body again - both in general and when he got to see Zelda again. Atia had been the one to help give him all that since she was the one to 'blame' for him being there in the first place. He was happy. He didn't think it was wrong to let himself feel happy and he responded poorly to those who suggested he should feel crappy all the time because none of the collared had been asked if they wanted to come to Atia.
Other people who have seen the island as a good place for similar reasons supported Link being happy and were non-manipulative CR, but they weren't strictly against Atia either. And he also had friends that were supportive of him finding things to be happy about. Instead of pushing hard for him to oppose Atia, they supported him being happy if he could be.
As I said, most of the strong opposition came from Maraich who kept trying to convince Link that whatever happiness they found on the island was a fluke. A good deal of Link defending Atia during the last four-five months of the relationship was just to directly and stubbornly oppose Maraich's opinions that their feeling for each other and the happiness they'd had was just a coincidence. That Atia had no part in it despite her being the cause of them meeting.
Link has also vocally opposed Sanae when Sanae has claimed the same kind of thing, when she claimed that any good stuff that happened was just 'coincidence' and Atia only ever had a hand in bad stuff. Coincidence isn't something I've ever seen Link really believing in due to the prophetic dreams and him having a destiny he's fulfilled. This may be a point of contention in our interpretations, but I've always seen Link as believing that things don't randomly happen - they happen for a reason, even if that reason is 'fate decreed it would happen'.
Even his best friend, Dirk, agreed that people can and should be allowed to be happy on the island. Dirk, while opposed to Atia, was still okay with being on the island and living as they did because he was happy there. His best friend was from a canon where, when he finally went back, he was going back to be violently beaten and gang-raped and possibly die in a fire (all on the same night). Dirk still experienced rape on Atia, but he'd also found the love of his life, got married, and lived a lot better than he'd ever done as the leader of a motorcycle gang in a poor Berlin neighborhood. He was fine with Link supporting Atia, even if he didn't particularly like her, because he'd found a better life due to her interference. He was even just a little bit thankful for all he'd been given, despite the problems with the curses and captivity - though he only ever admitted that once and very privately.
As I said in the previous reply, though, Link has never been against people opposing Atia even when he was at his most vocal about trying to understand her position better. He is against violent methods that will result in innocents getting hurt. But he has outright stated - more than once to several different people over the course of the last year - that if it comes to that being the only way to send those who want to go home, home, he will do everything in his power kill Atia and he will not hesitate in doing so.
With a decent portion of his close CR having left the island, he's started to rely on Maraich (again) and Vergil for more emotional support. They are both vocally opposed to Atia and that's going to be a big help in leading him to the breaking point I've been working towards with him. Which, I will say again, I've probably taken too long to get to. My only defense on that front is that I've enjoyed a lot of the sidetracking in that department that my CR has brought me.
Again, thank you for taking the time to put all this out here. I'll bookmark it and keep it in mind as I move forward with his story arc in Amat.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-07 01:18 am (UTC)(link)You're talking about Link, the Hero of Time, trying to "understand people better" when it comes to them "disagreeing/protesting/fighting against" a "goddess" who put COLLARS ON THEM that will CHOKE AND KILL THEM if they do not FUCK.
Could you please examine your logic? Because no interpretation of Link that I know of would deem any goddess "motherly/kind/generous/loving/giving/whatever" when people are KIDNAPPED and FORCED TO HAVE SEX or they will DIE.
Okay. I'm done here. You are so deeply ingrained in your imaginary world that it's beyond even trying.

It's not like he's been told that some foolish guy with a powerful mask has been messing things up and it's not really his fault, it's the masks fault, so he should go easy on the obviously EVIL kid who's been cursing people and killing them and causing death and destruction and is even wanting to DESTROY THE FUCKING WORLD WITH A MOON. No, that's totally okay because only the important TWO people believe it's the mask he's wearing, despite the rest of the world knowing it's that crazy imp that did all that.
No, there's no reason what-so-ever that Link might have a skewed perspective of the world or be naive enough to make that kind of mistake and have it be perpetuated by others influencing him.
I can use hyperbole too.
I know this is snappish, and at this point - to you specifically - I don't feel like trying to be polite.
Just because Link is a hero, it doesn't mean he is perfectly knowledgeable about what is GOOD and what is EVIL in EVERY situation. In the case of the Crit I replied to, I agree I stretched out his learning curve longer than I should have. But post-MM, Link is starting to learn that there's a lot more to how people act than just 'good' or 'evil' - even for people who should be 'obviously' evil, and this is something I wanted to explore by bringing him to Amat.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-07 01:51 am (UTC)(link)You're throwing canon situations into this pot as if they come even close to the whole fuck-or-you-die situation. This is control via collar, fuck or die, people are constantly cursed, personalities are skewed, relationships are shattered, lives are destroyed, children are stolen. This is so obvious for even a fucking 5 year old to get let alone the motherfucking Hero of Time.
Someone who's supposed to have the triforce of courage, someone who's supposed to be strong and HEROIC and you turned him into such a weak character it's painful to watch. I scroll whenever you post.
You seriously picked the wrong character. And you are seriously blind to a fault. An anon knew exactly what you were going to do even before you posted here. You are an absolute joke.

EDIT: And for reference? "people are constantly cursed, personalities are skewed, relationships are shattered, lives are destroyed, children are stolen" happened in MM because of the Skull Kid and Link had to fix every single one of them.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-07 02:01 am (UTC)(link)It should have been really obvious to Link on day 1 that this was an unjust, unfair, skewed situation. That people were miserable, suffering, and that he should try to help them. Not kiss some goddess ass. He didn't kiss the skull kid's ass, he did his best to try and stop him. Yes, Link might "go easy" on the goddess too in the end, if he wants to try and look at it from her side (even though I don't think he would, you could say that) but he would never defend her. He didn't defend the skull kid's actions, ever, the whole point of the game was to stop him.
This should be really obvious and that's the painful part about talking to you. It's like trying to get through to a brick wall.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-07 02:02 am (UTC)(link)Atia is not acceptable. Link should be helping people and go after her to STOP her. THIS IS A NO BRAINER!
You type it yourself and you STILL CAN'T SEE! I can't believe you sometimes.

I have this thread bookmarked in my HMD already and I'm looking over what I have planned with my CR to see where and how I can start making corrections to how I play him without ignoring what's already happened. I do want to improve.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-07 02:38 am (UTC)(link)Sometimes people take a character into a step that's so OOC that it just turns people off entirely. That would be one of them for me too. Why bother playing with someone who doesn't get something that blatantly OOC? There's a huge difference between a minor flub and a MAJOR flaw.
And you filling this thread with your constant justifications isn't helping my opinion either. It's just motivating me to avoid you harder.
