I'm sad that RDJ is old and they'll probably have to recast Tony Stark after the Avengers 2 and I don't know if I can cope with that.

I don't think they'll need to recast Tony since he's not supposed to be young. Tony Stark is a man in his 40s which as long as they don't try to make all the movies happen in like the span of a year, he'll age just like RDJ does so they won't be too far apart. If they have to recast him because of age, they'll have to recast Banner and Hawkeye, too soon.

Isn't Tony in his 30s or thereabouts in the comics?

RDJ is 47 and has said he's not sure how many more action types of movies he wants to do because of his age, especially after he damaged his ankle trying to do his own stunt and halted production on IM3 for something like two weeks.

If he wants to start taking on different genres and leave Tony behind, they'll have to recast considering he has no more contract at this point.

Also, do people really want him to play Tony Stark until he's in the grave? Because that's a stupid expectation and not fair to him. I like the MCU movies and all, but having ten-twenty more years of movies all in the same continuity is completely dumb.

Last I remembered, Tony was supposed to be in his late thirties in the majority of the comics. RDJ left those in the dust a decade ago.

Yeah I don't want RDJ to have to play Tony Stark until he's 60 or anything, it's just... I like him and he is fun and funny and does a good job, so I hope they don't try to just continue on with the quippy swaggering Stark that RDJ perfected with some other dude.

He's different enough from comics Tony that they could take a different tack with the character and another guy though.

I don't think they're going to let go of RDJ yet a while, tbh. He's a huge draw for the franchise, perhaps the biggest one for a lot of reasons. But also, on the point of RDJ wanting to do less action movies, it's possible that he'll continue playing Tony Stark but that Tony Stark won't have such a strong role as Iron Man in the coming movies. Or else they'll be more careful about what stunts RDJ does and what he is made to sit out on. And a fair bit of the Iron Man stuff is done with CGI anyway, lots of possibilities for RDJ to continue the role without getting to physically involved. It also wouldn't surprise me if the drama around will he or won't he get his contract renewed is ultimately a publicity stunt to keep fans guessing and then have the ~big reveal~ closer to Avengers 2 promotion.

I can't believe you think that nearing 50 is old.

When people live to be 85-100, 47 isn't even halfway there yet, christ. (Obviously this is dependent upon RDJ's actual preferences for himself and given that his lifestyle was once pretty wild, I can bet that's taken a toll on him). But fuck.

anon plz

being 50 in hollywood is old. actresses get less work once they hit, like, 30, and after that they only get certain stereotypical parts (the seductive cougar, moms, uppity businesswomen, workaholic bosses). the actresses who are actually very good and continue on may get more interesting roles, sure, but still.

in hollywood? 50 is old.

And for this specific kind of role and film. Don't play dumb, I don't literally mean nursing-home old.
