any advice appreciated but no spoilers past book 2 / early s3 please.

Wait until you get to A Storm of Swords. That's when Jamie starts to get POV chapters and I would advise that you try reading them aloud. You get a good sense of his voice that way.

Jaime's more of a supporting character through the first two books, and while he's still in the books/show, it's not until book 3 that you see his mechanics as to why he does what he does. It also is a great turning point for him as a character and it might give you more of an insight as to how to play him from an earlier book/season if that's what you'd prefer.
