To be honest I think it's going to be kinda awkward no matter when you pull Santa from. Anyway, standard disclaimer: I haven't played 999 in a while and a canon review has been on my to-do list for a few months so mileage? Varies. Take what you think is useful, shuck the rest. I'm not going to pretend like I'm an absolute authority.

On a superficial level, Santa's smug, cocky, and angry. He's foul mouthed and impulsive. Reckless. And not the brightest crayon in the box. Not black, don't get me wrong, but maybe a mahogany or blue green in terms of colors.

This isn't entirely untrue, because if I had to pick a single word to describe Santa it would probably be a tossup between either driven or angry. He not a serene guy. Personally, I see him with some self-loathing issues: less of a Ikari Shinjiesque 'wah wah wah I suck why was I born' and more 'I completely, totally, utterly fucked up - even if there was nothing a kid could've done there I'm still partially blaming myself - and my sister suffered as a result' in terms of self-loathing which turn manifests as anger. He's angry at himself, angry at what his sister has to go through, angry at Gentarou "Dickweed" Hongou and his associates, probably kind of angry about the fact that ultimately he's not the one who can save her and at the crucial moment he's utterly useless. Frustrated might be a better word, as angry carries certain connotations which don’t exactly apply here, but I like angry.

Point being, though, he's not happy about certain things. And he's driven to change them and is going to do whatever it takes. I mean, shit. You can see the result. The guy's not half-assing things, even if there's only a 1 in 6 chance (barring additional paths that exist that we don't see in which case the odds are much higher) that he'll be successful in ensuring his sister lives.

Santa's not the guy in charge, though. That's his sister. The creators said that they're Leia and Han Solo, but I personally see them as more Batman and Robin. She's changed as a result of being a paradox in a box for nine years. He, by comparison, is more...normal? It'll depend on how you perceive their relationship to normally be like. Personally, I see him as an amoral yet caring big brother who keeps her normal and has his own code of ethics but would ultimately be really okay with shoving Hongou inside of a woodchipper if that's what is called for.

...and, you know, if he knew he had to, like, no doubts at all, I think he'd shoot Junpei, although he wouldn't feel happy afterwards about it.

I'd say Santa's not impulsive, as having the patience to wait nine long years will teach you patience even if you don't want it to, but he is...kind of reckless? There's short term gain and long term gain. Like I see him being more than willing to punch an asshole if he feels like the chump needs punching and not care. In terms of decisions that have longer reaching ramifications he'll have a weird mix of calculated decisions and recklessness in that he'll not opt to do something that will hurt his longer term goals (unless he's pissed off, in which case the chump gets punched), but what he's willing to do to help his longer term goals...well, he's got a nice and large range of options which are probably far broader than a traditional shonen protagonist is willing to consider.

In terms of intelligence he's far brighter than he lets on, but you should know that by now.

How this translates to a game will depend on when you take him and where you take him to.

Okay, so, let's use Terminal Tokyo as an example.

Regardless of when Santa's pulled his reaction to seeing Digimon would probably be some form of what the goddamn fuck is this shit, complete with a disbelieving laugh whilst Veemon chirps, "I'm your partner!" The degree to which he'd play along would depend on when he's pulled and if he sees value in playing dumb. Mid-999 Santa would be incredibly, incredibly guarded. He'd play up his 999 persona because who knows who's the abductor? Who's the mastermind responsible for him landing in a given jamjar? He'd definitely, should he be in Terminal Tokyo, not trust his partner and poor Veemon would have to work fucking hard to break down Santa's walls. But why should he? Assuming he hadn't gone crazy and that Veemon isn't some elaborate...robot or some sort of ruse sent via the morphogenetic field he's still some stranger.

Post-999 Santa, assuming the True End, would be more willing to play along with the setting and Veemon even though no matter when he is he'll probably seek to change things, and not necessarily in an altruistic 'I fight for the people!' sense. But it's like...his sister's alive. Hongou's stashed in a trunk. Everything's pretty awesome, so even though he'll still be driven to figure out what the fuck is going on and how the fuck to get back because he still has shit to do...he's okay. He'll joke with Veemon and in a reasonably sincere way. He'll still be guarded, but he'll play along a bit more because that shit that needs doing? It's not a matter of life or death to his sister. So. Yeah.

And if you go with the Safe end you will have to bust your ass to keep him from becoming a deathseeker and/or potential villain because he is a very broken man at that point. Could be fun depending on location.

I'll get more specific if you think it'll be useful and have a game genre in mind or whatever.
