Make sure you warn appropriately along with the cut, make sure you do your reasearch about anything you don't have personal experience with, and don't use his drug use for drama whoring purposes. Most of the people I've seen trigger freakouts have failed hard on at least one of those points, and even if they've later corrected the mistake, the annoyance lingers.

It might also help to have a permission post where people can opt out of either dealing with any mention of his drug use, or just playing with him at all, in case there is someone in your game who wants to avoid the subject matter entirely.
