Re: Rosalind Lutece | Bioshock Infinite
(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)I think the main thing you need to maintain her "voice" is to remember all of the quirky little arguments she has with her "brother" over how to phrase things due to their unique situation. Also remember that she's eloquent (and even a little snobby) but she's also very precise--using big, unusual words to some degree will probably help her sound right, but if a simpler, less "fancy" word would be clearer, and closest to what she actually means, then it's better to use that. Both of the Luteces also seem to vocalize when they're thinking--either with little "hmmm"s or by thinking out loud. ("Surprising. I expected the cage.")
The main difference between the two Luteces, from what I've seen, is that after their "death" Rosalind prefers a very hands-off approach to things, while her brother is much more of a meddler. As long as Rosalind is with Robert, she's happy. He's the one that decides they need to fix what they've put in motion by helping Booker get to Elizabeth--Rosalind states several times she doesn't agree with it, but is going along with it to appease her brother. This is probably at least in part due to their different feelings on fate. Robert seems determined that they can change things, whereas Rosalind is much more fatalistic--at one point she says something along the lines of "where he sees a blank page, I see King Lear." I guess, in a sense, Robert is more concerned with "variables" whereas Rosalind is focused on "constants" among the universes. (As an aside, while Robert is more concerned with fixing what went wrong, I don't think Rosalind doesn't feel any guilt for her part in what happened--after all, she says that Booker is a "hair shirt" to both of them.)
That being said, I got the impression that Rosalind was slightly more adventurous than Robert when they were living--getting Robert to cross over to her world seems to be her idea, and when we see them before Robert crosses over she's urging him to jump through while he's suddenly getting cold feet (although to be fair, he was risking MUCH more than she was). I'm not sure why she's so attached to her "brother"--is it narcissism? Is it some sort of weird selfcest thing? Is she simply lonely and wants a companion that's on the same intellectual level than her? I really don't know--that's probably something you should decide for yourself.
Depending on where you're going to play her and what canon point you take her from, I can see her changing a little. For example, I think she'll be fairly disturbed if she ends up in a jamjar without her brother after their "accident." For one thing, as mentioned above her main motivation seems to be simply being with her brother. Secondly, after having the ability to jump around from universe to universe in the blink of an eye, being trapped somewhere and forced to move in time as a normal mortal would probably be VERY jarring. I can't imagine that she'd allow herself to show how thrown off she is outwardly, but I think she'd probably be driven to find a way back--unless she just decided it was her "fate," I suppose. I think it would also be really fun to have her constantly test other characters to figure out why they were "chosen" to be trapped, or maybe to figure out "constants and variables" between how people arrive in the jamjar.
