Re: simple icon commissions!

Why is everyone a balloon? I don't get it. Skin never has such a plastic-y unnatural shine to it. You've taken the time to add that highlight but you don't examine your light source and apply it appropriately to eyes and hair? And in the "new" icon, why is she fuschia? Where are her pupils? Why did you make the clean lines of the original scan into those muddy, pixelated ones? Why do the shadows ignore the contours of her face? Why do the orange streaks in her hair defy the light and shadows in the rest of it? Why did you get rid of her eyelashes?

I'm not actually trying to be a dick; I'm genuinely trying to understand what your method is here. You advertise these as simple icons, but simple would have been preserving the lineart and following the previous patterns of shadow, not adding superfluous and unattractive details like the balloon shine and extra eyebrow, and omitting the random orange hair strands. And, also, coloring her a little closer to a normal, human skintone.

they're actually advertised as simple because i originally only had the top three icons in there, and didn't really change the subject after editing. i also softened the coloring a bit here, but that doesn't really fix those points you mentioned about light sources since all i did was tone down the "fuchsia" tone. the lineart's pixelated since i always sharpen it before coloring so the lines are a bit more defined, which... looks pretty nasty full size, now that you point it out! as for the other edits, i was trying to color pb icons for a character and this one just turned into the poor unfortunate test subject.

and don't worry about sounding harsh, anon! your points are very valid, and i did post an icon with a coloring method i'm trying out for the first time to an anon comm.

you could use levels or curves to make the lines more black/defined?

i don't think your coloring is bad but i also think there is something to be said for preserving the original look of the character. i don't know the character but it looks like she's supposed to be a fresh-faced young girl who doesn't wear makeup, like a lot of anime characters, so the red glossy lips and cheeks and black eyebrows may not be as appropriate.

and uh now i notice that it's for an oc, whoops, so the last part of my comment may not be so applicable. but it looks like you're using shiny red facial features to add dimension to the icons (like the bright red noses that are popular on tumblr) and i don't think it's necessary. your simple icons are actually quite nice.

the version of photoshop i have doesn't have curves, but i can definitely experiment around with levels to see how it goes. thanks for the tip, anon!

and, that might... be due to the fact that i spend a lot of time on tumblr, but i've toned it down to what i hope is a significantly more natural color over here. i'm really flattered you like my simpler icons, though!
