I don't know how many people here have played the Thief series, but I'm incredibly frustrated by Eidos Montreal's decision to not use Stephen Russell as the voice of Garrett. Goddamn it, I've been looking forward to a fourth Thief since the thi4f site went up and Eidos fed us hints about their next game starting with a 'T'.

If the new VA is decent enough that the voice still sounds like Garrett to my ears, I honestly don't think I can complain. If they assign someone to the job who just can't hack it... yeah, count me in with you. Garrett's a great character and giving his lines to someone who can't do them justice would be a travesty.

The first link is the new actor. It's not terrible and the dialogue itself isn't terribly inspiring, but it just doesn't sound like Garrett to me. The second one is an earlier recording with Russell reading the dialogue.

I don't know, just the subtle nuisances that Russell puts into it - the contempt in his voice at the word hero for instance. I'm going to miss it.

Garrett's narration is the reason that the Thief games have remained some of my favorite games for so long. Perhaps it's just nostalgia talking, but I can help but feel disappointed in the change.

I don't think the second guy is bad at all. In fact he sounds less "actory" to my ears. One of my biggest peeves with games is when it sounds very overdone, not that I think the other guys is atrocious by any means. Just as someone with no history with the game, I actually prefer the second guy.

Wait, I meant I prefer the first video. I listened to the videos in the opposite order of how you posted them. Old guy then new guy.

As a huuuuge Thief fan (with a quiet Garrett muse), I've been anticipating this, but now I'm kind of... meh. I mean, I was expecting it, but I tried to be hopeful.

BUT WAIT... Okay, I thought the fourth game wasn't even supposed to have Garrett? But that's his mechanical eye. Which makes this really, really weird, because that means it has to be set after The Dark Project, but why would he have become a thief again after the end of Deadly Shadows?

I'm just puzzled.

Originally, Garrett wasn't supposed to be in the fourth game considering that his story was more or less wrapped up or at least the balance between the three forces interested in the city restored (or in the case of the Keepers having everything yanked down around them).

I knew this and was cool with it. I could play another thief set in the same world (perhaps it would be an apprentice of his considering the full circle ending that came at the end of DS).

However, with the changes to make the main character Garrett and reboot the entire franchise (effectively moving away from the story set by other games), I expected Garrett to be, well, Garrett, I guess is the easiest way to say it. I'd hoped (and wanted) Russell to remain his VA because, in my opinion, he MADE Garrett. He's the reason that the character stood out to me, why I still replay all the games (even that mess that was DS) frequently.

And after talking to my gf, maybe it's not Garrett, just someone else with a mechanical eye because they wanted to keep the gimmick? So it could be that the new VA just isn't supposed to be Garret at all.

They're also changing his whole personality (Garrett never stole stuff for the thrills, wtf), downplaying the stealth aspects of the game and removing all the magic from the lore. This may or may not be a somewhat decent game, but it definitely won't be Thief.

That's incredibly disappointing. The more I hear about this game, the more it chafes me.
