Why is everyone a balloon? I don't get it. Skin never has such a plastic-y unnatural shine to it. You've taken the time to add that highlight but you don't examine your light source and apply it appropriately to eyes and hair? And in the "new" icon, why is she fuschia? Where are her pupils? Why did you make the clean lines of the original scan into those muddy, pixelated ones? Why do the shadows ignore the contours of her face? Why do the orange streaks in her hair defy the light and shadows in the rest of it? Why did you get rid of her eyelashes?
I'm not actually trying to be a dick; I'm genuinely trying to understand what your method is here. You advertise these as simple icons, but simple would have been preserving the lineart and following the previous patterns of shadow, not adding superfluous and unattractive details like the balloon shine and extra eyebrow, and omitting the random orange hair strands. And, also, coloring her a little closer to a normal, human skintone.
