I'm surprised that there are more players from Symphonia, Abyss, and Vesperia than Graces given that it's newer.

I'm even more surprised that the two characters I would've pegged as being the most popularly played ones aren't.

eh, those three are extremely popular imo, and it helps in symphonia's case that new material for it has came out the last few years with the ovas. graces in general just doesn't seem that popular.

though i'm curious, which two characters were you thinking of?

Hubert and Richard. I was expecting the cute tsun boy and the angsty pretty boy to attract legions of fans since those are usually the character types people go crazy over. Add in the intense ho yay on Richard's side and the chance for brother-shipping and I would've thought people would jump on that.

graces was also released on a PS3 which isn't as popular of a console in the US, which may have something to do with it as well.

it isn't? i only know a few people who have 360s, everyone else i know has a ps3.

the ps3 is really popular in the states. the problem lies with namco's lack of advertising and the fact that graces was released alongside bigger games (ps3 games included). tales just isn't well-known enough.

That's such a weak excuse. Namco did a ton of advertising for Graces.

The cold, hard fact is that JRPGs just aren't as popular as they used to be.

I would've loved to get Graces, but I don't own a PS3 and can't justify spending that much money for one game. It must've done well enough if they're also bringing over Xillia, though.

I sunk money into an Xbox solely for Vesperia, but I can't afford to do the same for a PS3 these days.

IMO the main reason is that, for a long time, those were the big three that the Western fandom had access to.

Symphonia was probably the first Tales game that a lot of people played. Abyss was probably the second game, and the "newest" game for a long time. Vesperia was the first one on HD gen consoles, and (like Symphonia) had a distinction for being a really good JRPG on a console almost barren of them.

Graces is newer, but it hasn't had as much time to really simmer within the fandom and spread. The other three were about for so long that they had time to be passed around and recommended. (On a cynical note, it also didn't help that by the time Graces came out, a significant Negative Fandom had emerged, tearing apart and criticising Graces for the most insignificant of perceived flaws, the most egregious of which was "Not Being Vesperia PS3".)

On a related note, I have to ask the American fandom: why isn't Legendia more popular? As a non-American (who never got the chance to play it) I would be interested in hearing what the fandom reaction was to it after it came out, and why it seems to be the black sheep of the American releases.
