I suppose that might be because the Braddock Academy kids are, if I remember correctly, either completely new characters or lesser-known characters than the rest of them. Like, I'm so miffed at Avengers Arena because of the horrible way they're writing Hazmat and the Runaways kids which is totally dampening any potential like of the book.

God thank you, I'm seeing so many people praise the character depth and it's like "actually this reads like Hopeless has barely read the canon of some of the characters he's writing."

I was especially bothered by Ken talking about being willing to play along and kill anyone he needed to as long as Jenny lived. Yeah, he's gonna want to keep her safe obviously and he'd absolutely sacrifice himself for her like he did, but did he not see Ken freaking out over accidentally killing a Nazi? He can't even say "well he's over that by now" because of that scene in the second to last Avengers Academy issue.

And yeah, the Braddock kids are new. Hopeless came up with all of them himself and...the book seems to mostly focus on them anyway so I really wish it could just be about them. He also can't fuck up their characterization if they're brand new. But if he didn't have some established names less people would've read it, I guess. Of course, most of the people I've seen reading it are X-23 fans who don't care about what happens to any of the other characters so just her would've been enough(and unlike the others she's pretty much guaranteed to either live or be resurrected so they're not gonna get as anxious about her safety as fans of any other character). Plus IIRC Marvel even played the "we have more characters than we know what to do with so we're getting rid of some" card in the advertising.

Huh, interesting. I'm not reading AA, but Hopeless's characterization in Cable & X-Force has been pretty excellent.

Different writers can be better/worst on different things, y'know. Like, I fucking love Matt Fraction on Hawkeye, but I thought he was horrible on Uncanny X-Men.

Yeah, totally true. Just interesting in this case cause I haven't read anything else this guy's worked on!

I'm really sad to here that. I've been looking forward to new Runaways anything, so was thinking of picking this one up just to see them. Sucks they're doing the normal ignoring characterization for whatever bs plot they have thing.

Yeah, Hopeless pretty much shits on any sort of established characterization. Like with most Runaways thing, your best bet is clutching the BKV/Alphona run to your chest and pretending it's the only thing that exists.
