I'm a TLH newbie, but reading the thread has got me kind of interested in playing a shapeshifting tentacle-beast/alien monster thing. Any tips to start out with-- things to do, not do, cap threads or open everything to anyway, what do you do about icons etc.?

You're going to want to cap threads, otherwise you will get swamped. If you're going to offer a lot of kinks then make sure to list them and what you also don't like, but that's really something everyone should do. Either way, best of luck to you.

icons depends on what sort of creature you're playing

there are all sorts of hentai manga and drawings out there you can grab generic icons of tentacles from. if you're looking for tentacles mid-sex, that's a little harder to find good ones of (especially for tentacles on men) but they're out there from the same sources.
